Whats the correct way to deadlift?

I know how to sqat and everything else. How do I dead lift. Do i bend my knees and pick up the bar? Do i bend my back, do I keep my feet apart as much as I do when i squat. It just looks like people picking up weight to me..And how do I figure out how much I should do?
I wanna start this new workout today with all compound exercises but I dont know how to deadlift

For a beginner in this lift I recommend a slightly wider than shoulder width stance, knees bent, back straight as possible with full concentration on not to arch, your first and initial move should be with your legs, not your back, then just stand up. Start of slow, light and with reps of 12. peace

Hopefully someone can post the link to animated exercises. DLs, while being one of the best exercises, can be one of the most dangerous. Do light weights until you adjust to them. Otherwise, you'll probably give up and never do them again.

You starting that new routine we talked about last week? I'm starting the one Cornholio laid out. You doing his or the one you initially posted?

To Dead lift:

1. Strap on a pair of depends to avoid public urination or defication.

2. Grab the bar
3. Bend straight over and lock your knees
4. Jerk real hard.
5. Call ambulance.

For real..

1. Strap on a pair of depends to avoid public urination or defication.

2. Start with your knees bent and hands on the bar. Back should be sort of arched in towards your stomach.

3. Start up with your legs force first and then smoothly roll your back to a standing lock as you come to and upright position.

4. Do the same thing in reverse.

Your legs should bear the brunt of the lift. If your lower back feels sore then you are lifting more from your back than legs.

So that's the step I've been missing...

I usually feel it mostly in my lower back. I think this is a difficult exercise to do if you're tall (I'm 6'2").

I'll try for better posture and concentrate on lifting more with my legs.

Where you feel it depends on what type of dl you're doing. Personally, I don't like stiff-legged. I've never tried sumo dls. Both my legs and my back feel it though.

Same issue here really, 6' 3" and I have found that if I concentrate on more of a initial leg movement with the left and more of an initial knee movement with the return I avoid the lower back tightness.

The first form is actually for stiff legged or keystone deads which you just do with insaneness in your eyes and drool going down your face. I just add those last things for fun to screw with all the HS kids in my gym.

Ask this question on the Power Lifting board. You'll get more responses.

Also, when you bend down, you sit back. Squeeze the glutes to get the bar off the floor. The legs start to straighten, all the while keeping the same back arch, you push the hips forward and lock out the dead.

I think www.deepsquatter.com has videos of people doing them.

Yeah I am trying the one I originally posted, only because it has something for arms in there as well. I might modify it alittle with growin's plan but Im just worried that Im not doing enough. I guess it is because on Arm day Im used to starting off with:
5x6-8 of barbell curl with warmup
6x6-8 of reverse barbell curl with ez curl bar
6x6-8 of preacher curl.

Ive been doing that arm workout for the last few months and it seemed to be working well. I need to put more emphasis on the rest of my body though and a new workout is in order. I hope i am not doing my arms a injustice by trying this new workout with less arm exercises but if I go hard and heavy with everything else maybe they will get a good workout also. My arms probably show the most impressive gains I've made overall and I would hate to loose any size on them. But they have been sore for the past week since I've last used my old arm routine and maybe it's time to chane up so I am not over training...I just love the pump I get when im finished though...My squat is pathetic BTW...
