Ok my van is in the shop and the dude says the catalytic converter is clogged up......
he can do
A) replace it but it costs like 200-300 bucks

B) put a hole in it and let the air come out somewhere else

i dont know crap about cars, what do u guys think?

I have a friend in NY that has inspections....here in tenn, if u got a box on wheels and it runs u can slap a tag on it

If he's willing to poke a hole in it, he will probably remove it. By poking a hole in it, you are merely causing an exhaust leak. (not good) If he removes it, he can put a pipe in it's place. Another option is gettin a hi-flow catalytic converter that will fit. They can be had on eBay for about 65 bucks.

It'll run just fine without it so cut it off. Just see how loud it is without it and have him weld some bigger schedule pipe onto the back if it's to out of hand for noise. Only time you remotely run the possibility of getting inspected for emissions is if you sell it but then it's someone else's problem

Let him make a hole in it .(it will make your van a little louder) You could have it replaced later when you have more money. You could have it removed. (also illegal). It's the emissions , air pollution. I have a '87 gmc pick-up with a hole in the cat.convert. and no problems for over 2 years now. Good Luck!

As far as I know, if your car didn't have one at the time of it's manufacture, it doesn't require one.



And I've been pulled over for a lack of muffler many times.

lol...I'm not complaining.

It used to cost $3.00 to inspect your car. The station would get .50 cents per inspection or something like that.

They would halfway do an inspections which was basically seeing if your turn signals worked, brake lights, headlights aligned and that's about it. Never had anyone do an emission test on anything I have ever owned.

Most of the time, you could just drive into an inspection station and they would slap a sticker on your car for $3.00 and be in and out in 5 minutes. It was a big joke so the state did away with it.

get him to take it off. Heck, i got someone to pass my jeep on inspection in missouri even without a cat. lol. I paid him $20 for it though. Still cheaper than having it replaced.
