What the hell is a boil?

When I was a kid, I once had two boils the size of fists. FISTS!
Fucked up, man. I was only seven years old. FUCKED UP SHIT.

I was in the E.R. getting my hand set after breaking it and this woman was getting one lanced and scrapped out in the other
area. She was screaming like a bad horror movie and her husband was like WTF ar you people doing to her.
People came in looking at me thinking the bone setting person was screaming and I'm like
"damn what's going on over there, amputation civil war style" ?
My moms was an RN and said that lancing and scraping out a boil is very very painfull due to the amount of nerves you have to scrape to get it all out...

a boil is infection with staph. aureus in most cases as i remember, with pus formation im guessing from infiltration of kamikazi immune cells
a cyst can be due to anything, like a sweat duct getting all clogged up (seboharric(sp?) cyst)...i dont think it has to be from infection
i think once they pop naturally u can squeeze but if u do it prematurely it can scar

once a boil erupts it's a bloody, pus-drenched mess. it seems neer ending. one of my HS wreslting teammates had one and it burst during practice. it was one of the sickest things i've seen. ever.

Danielson, you're correct. It is caused by a Staph aureus infection.

Aren't they the same as an infected hair?
Notice in the pic, there's a hair growing out of the center.
I used to get them as a kid, and they were always where some friction pushed against a hair.
Like under your wallet, or keys in your pocket,
and there was always a hair in the middle.
Now as an adult I rarely get them where my head rests against the pillow and pushes short hairs back into the skin.
Pull out the hair, and the puss and infection drains with it.
I guess a boil is when you let it go further.
