What should he do?

GUARDIAN

High End Bro

My buddy who is in his 30's has worked for a major phone company for about 10 years now. His department is getting downsized and as a result he is getting RIFed. He has about 1 month left. He was just told that he has to train someone to do his job. This person has worked there for like 1 year.

It is not like this person has to do their work in addition to my buddies job they are just taking his job.

What should he do? Train them wrong. Tell them to fuck off. other ideas?

What is the worse that can happen? He gets fired. Oh no! A bad reference.

It does suck for him, but I am all about keeping the door open and not burning bridges. You just never know...

What is RIFed?

Worst that can happen??? I'm not sure but something tells me if he purposely "sabotages" the company (in refusing to properly train the new person, or by being a jerk to the new person, etc.) they can interfere with either his unemployment compensation or severance package. As silverstar said, you never burn your bridges, seriously. Especially if he expects to try to work in the even vaguely the same field or list the company for a reference.

Reduction In Force = RIFed

Gotcha, the new term for Downsized

Your friend's story is all too common, unfortunately, and it's not going to get better any time soon.

Personally, I wouldnt do anything to sabotage. Id think of it as an opportunity for me to move on and I'd train the person to do my job just the way I did it.

but then again, I have integrity.

Take the guy out and get knee walkin drunk during business hours. All the while, your drinking water camoflaged w/ the proverbial lemon, head back to work and email the boss from a coworkers PC that JR smells like liquor. He's fired and now you have your job back, since you already know the position...

I was talking to Bret Michaels, Kip Winger, Dave Mustaine, Dio and Gary Coleman yesterday - and we all agreed..

What is the incentive for the employee? Most companies offer 2-5 MONTH severance IF they stick around to X date. Until then, they train whoever.

This is to encourage the person to stay, and enjoy the severance. THe other option is to work and continue looking.

If he gets fired, he can enjoy immediately having no income, no severance and no ui. If that's what he feels is best for him - more power to him.
