Grateful Dead has sold out more concerts, more than a generations worth, let alone the merchandise and the "Dick's Pick's" that keeps coming out, even after the guy is actually dead. Paul McCartney isn't worth a Billion because he couldn't even outbid Micheal Jackson on the Beatles rights to their songs, that's why they are in so many commercials. I think Grateful Dead would be the top grossing band, in rock history. And yes, they still sell stuff like crazy.

My gut instinct is to say the Stones. They tour constantly, charge like $400 for tickets and license the crap out of their music for movies/tv. The Dead toured constantly and had lots of merch, but their ticket prices/licensing opportunities were not as great.
