What is the proper way to do barbell upright rows?

I actually prefer this movement with dumbbells. I find it easier on the wrists and I can get a more natural range throughout the movement due to not being restricted by a barbell. Give it a try...

You can try a EZ Curl bar to reduce stress on the wrists.
When I did them I brought the bar to my chin. Now I don't do them at all, because it caused shoulder problems, even when I switched to a double pulley. It took several years for the problem to develope, but when I resume that exercise it comes back immediately.

Yea, I don't do the excercise at all due either for the same reasons, although my shoulders are good right now I'd like to keep them that way.

I bought some DVD's on Westside BB Louie Simmons training. They suggest face pulls off of a high pulley (Similiar to upright rows only you're pulling horizontally towards your face) - damn if that didn't cause shoulder problems by the 2nd try at it.

I would do them in the office of a Shoulder Surgeon

ditto... they always give my shoulders alot of pain when I try to do them... when I was younger it was no problem I loved them but as I got older and an lift more they cause me pain... bent rows, deads and shrugs all seem to hit that area just fine... everything I need, but you could try some reverse flies if you really want to but I never really have and don't feel I've lost out!!
