unfortunately I know alot of situation where the woman get's to where she wants to be and then decides she's not compatible with the guy anymore and wants to trade him in..............but I've seen this from men as well.

Of course is needs to be shared equally... otherwise someone would always feel like they are dating down. It works out the best when both think that dated up.
