it's a southern slang term for grandmother or mother or aunt or some older female authority figure.

here in new orleans, having more than one generation in the same house is not all that rare of an occurrance. usually the older female figure would do the cooking for the family. for some reason, stewed chicken and rice is a meal the....mature...laides always seemed to be cooking. i don't know why....some things just are.
