What is a Six Sigma Black Belt?

It sounds like another lame IT buzzword that does nothing but make somebody sound irreplaceable.

It is a mgt structure. I had to take it for my degree. Looks good on a resume that's about it.

I just told you what it was.. it is a collection of tools like lean production (JIT etc), TQM, SPC, DFMA, QFD, and project management tools like critical path analysis...

It is a course concentrating on existing manufacturing management tools and methods and not a buzzword....

Green Belt here...

it's not useless or merely a collection of buzzword right? I don't think so...

it's a commercial perhaps batchelors level course in manufacturing management and process/design efficiency...

it's worth having as a manufacturing engineer...

It's mostly common sense IMO, but some of the lean processes they teach help keep things lined up and moving.

The lessons are not new and go back to Japan and the 70's..
Unfortunatly, usually when you use the processes and identity waste, most failures are due to not following thru and fixing it
or fixing it for a month and then going back to business as usual.

Black belt is shit , I work for GE and although they get paid well , most of them HATE their jobs , previously they were individuals who did shit , made shit happen , now they are de-motivated.

they don't know how lucky they are to be manufacturing engineers with jobs in a blu chip engineering company..

black belt isn't responsible for their attitudes.. everyone moans in manufacture.. goes with the territory... bitch bitch bitch.... management doesn't tell us nothing moan whinge...

My green belt has a Beretta 9MM on it with 4 15 round magazines. LOL

My civie job back home is as the training coordinator for a plastics plant. Lots of SPM, ISO, etc. There is a huge amount of paperwork and followup. I'm an internal auditor as well. We have a staff position who is running another corporation mandated controls program.
I spent 15 years in production, & we fight the attitudes all the time. It's an uphill battle, but the processes do help identify the wastes and minimize lost product due to out of controlled excursions.

the principles of SPC were formulated in the USA back in the 60's.... DFMA is American also.. QFD is Japanese origin... lean began in Toyota...
