Before we can trace the history of boybands, we must define what a boyband is. There has to be looser guidelines than the current pop inventory lists: the heartthrob, the shy one, the rebel, and so on. There is a musical component (a.k.a. harmonious love songs) as well as visual (synchronized dance moves and cute good looks) that play parts in making a group a "boyband". But the link between all boybands has to be the fanbase: teenage girls. It is important for success that the fans feel a closeness with the members of the group. Basically, boybands charm their way into the teeny-bopper heart through every available medium (radio, television, magazines, internet, live shows ...)

Yeah, they played instruments but looking back at their invasion of America, they were targeted towards teenage girls, The Fab Four. I think this is what makes them so much a boyband.

Yeah they were a boy band, but at least they didn't dance around with chairs and glittery denim outfits.

Seeing O-Town really scared me.
