I rented a Rio Memorial Weekend for a long trip. Averaged 43MPG per tank on 8 tanks of gas. I had to shoehorn myself into it, but damned good mileage.

Even at the EPA projections, function list price versus list price and find out how many miles you'd have to run before the Prius is cost-effective versus the Rio.

Fuck you, at least I got a real Cheesesteak Memorial weekend.

There's one place here I can go to and get a real cheesesteak. The owner moved here from S. Philly. I uh, go more than I should.

I love philly cheesesteak, when I visit my bros in philly I go to Jim's once a day.

That was before I gave up eating beef though :(

Toyota Prius MSRP: $23770
Kia Rio MSRP: $10890

That's 3211 gallons of gas difference at $4.01/gal

At 10 mpg difference in highway mileage, you'd have to run the Prius 32,110 miles more than the Rio to be cost-effective.

Why would you give up eating beef? It's so delicious.

twofold,

the main reason and tipping point is that the production of beef is terrible for the environment. It produces more environmental pollution than all of the motor vehicles in the world combined. Its also not sustainable, meaning, you can only feed a small fraction of the world beef, it just takes too many resources. Its a luxury item, but its sold as a staple, go to food here (in the form of hamburger/ground beef). I have no problem with enjoying a nice steak, but I think our dependence on it as a relatively quick, convenient, and inexpensive food source is misguided.

The secondary reason is simply that its not the most healthy for you. You can find some lean cuts, but in general its higher in saturated fat than most other protein/meat sources.

a yaris is a good little car, especially if you get the t4. a prius is just...so, so wrong. i hate the whole "buy our product and you will be saving the environment" bullshit. i find it ridiculous that people still fall for it.

do you really think that by creating the prius, toyota were very happy that they were doing something positive for the environment? no, they were very happy because they had found a gap in the market, and because they make millions more by exploiting the easily led people who would rather buy something than actually do something.

43mpg ? d00d please..... That car drinks more than a Yaris and the best we ever did with our Yaris (highway) was almost 40mpg.

who gives a fuck what toyota's intentions were; buying a prius is definitely doing something positive for the environment

Toyota isn't a charity, I give them credit for finally being one of the companies to step up and help us reduce the dependence on oil/gasoline. Its a step in the right direction, there is still more work to be done, but should they have just done what every other company did and not give a fuck?

At what MPH does it change from being an electric car to a gas powered car?

(That combined with your driving requirements would determine value of owning one)

exactly, and that is what i recommend to people as well.. a throw away car.. if gas goes to $8 like in the EU, how many people will just walk away from that car payment..

25 mph

to be honest i would have thought that a little one litre driven sensibly would be just as economic as any fancy arse hybrid. they're just trying to cash in on people is all it is. like the fabric softener ad-we all know concentrated is better-less packaging, less lorries on the roads, but then they put a little kid on saying 'every child has the right to a nicer world' basically making these easily led people think "oh no if i dont buy this product im being mean to kids" its all bullshit

There's also the hidden cost of humiliation that comes from being seen everyday in a Kia Rio. Some prices are too high to pay. I'll stick with my European ride, which gets fine mileage, and deal with expensive gas. :jenscat

my car now gets 25 mpg, I hope to get a prius that gets me close to 75mpg

gas kicks in at around 15 mph, but it still uses electric power if you want to accelerate hard or drive on the freeway.

you don't do all or probably even most of your driving on the highway, AND, you don't have to drive anything MORE than the other...as long you as you drive enough miles for the gas payment difference to cover the price difference you are gravy.

I can't believe you just used "arse" and "lorries" in the same post. LOL (j/k)

If you get in a crash on the freeway - you'll be screaming at yourself for 2 seconds that you didn't buy a truck - before your head is decapitated.

Word. I also drive a truck.

If I get in an accident - the chances increase of me surviving. And I like anythign that increases my chance to live.

Some people I knew died in a car crash last month. They were in a tiny car. And they had their seatbelts on (so much for that theory).
