What exactly causes mittelschmerz?

As I sit here ovulating and clutching my side, I'm wondering why it would hurt so much to have something as small as an unfertilized ovum going down my Fallopian tube.

Is there some kind of peristalsis action that propels the egg forward, and that causes the cramping?

As for exactly what is causing all the pain, it couldnt just be the movement of the egg down the tube else we would all have the same amount of pain as yourself. Knowledge is power, and I wish I could empower you just now. But hey think of all the character you're building.

It's odd: I only get cramps every other month...so with only one tube. Doc said it was normal...

Mittelschmerz (literally translated from German, it means "middle hurt" or "middle pain") is discomfort that occurs around ovulation. I did a little Yahooing, and apparently it's caused by follicle growth pressing on the ovary, or general irritation of the uterine lining from the egg passing through. http://health.yahoo.com/health/encyclopedia/001503/0.html

I thought the pain was caused by the swelling of the ovary & the subsequent "bursting" of the egg out of the ovary into the fallopian tube. Not the actual travel part.

Whatever it is, I feel it on my left side here & there & yes, it hurts!
