What equipment do I use to max on deads?

I'm going to buy some chalk today because I borrowed some last week during my regular workout and it helped a great deal. I plan to do a couple more regular dead sessions with 5x5 and then try for a max. I don't use straps or a belt when I dead for exercise but for max I'm thinking that it might be smart to wear a belt. I know that most here don't use straps ever in order to build there grip, so that's what I've been doing. I'm wondering though about a belt for deads max.

I wear a belt when maxing, but not while training.

no straps............. they only permote weakness imho. use the chalk and the belt.

i only wear straps on rack deads. on regular deads, some chalk and a belt. on a max day, i'll wear my suit. tb

Also do you use that same philosophy for squats, no belt when training, and belt when maxing.

What do you think I should try for my max on deads. When I first decided to start training them I found out my max was 385 and that was with never training before. I tried a few warm-up sets and then went for it. So I decided to start my 5x5 at 315. Anyway I first worked up to 340 and then took some time off after that I went back at it again and started at 320 and I'm again back to 340. I plan to get to 350 for the 5x5 pretty easily, my strength has increased very steadliy with the deads, and I'm loving them. So I'm certain I can pull 405 and was thinking of maybe going for 425. Any suggestions or should I just shut and lift?

yeah i dont wear any equipment except for maybe wrist wraps for ohp.

work your way up like wsb does......... i know your not a powerlifter, but your going for a 1 rep max on a powerlifting movement so here's what i recomend.

45 for 5
95 for 5
135 for 3
185 for 3
225 for 3
275 for 1
315 for 1
365 for 1

then try 405 if it goes up good, then judge how much to put on and max from thier.

oh and on squats, wear knee wraps if you have them

when going for a max you go for a max. weather its a gym lift, or in a contest. put the knee wraps on.

I'll take it slow and warm up right but that seems like a ton of warm-up? I've worn knee wraps once when lifting squats before and it's crazy how much they help. I personally don't like to wear them though because I never lift that heavy and I'm not lifting competition weight. Although it would certainly add probably 50 pounds to my squat max which right now is only 405.

I guess its all in perspective........ i max once every 18 weeks.

If you can deadlift more than you can hold... use straps, there's no sense in holding yourself back from deadlifting more.

However, be sure to train your grip so you dont have to use them later.

Then again, if you just don't use straps, the problem solves itself.

Chalk....

A belt if it's a comp.

Knee wraps? Never heard of that one.

I wear an old loose squat suit to deadlift in a comp, but only because it's more comfortable than my obsinglet.

I did that in a meet, and I liked it. I'm not sure if it helped my poundages at all, but it was nice feeling the slightest bit of rebound in my butt.

in the gym i wear only a belt. in the meet i wear my squat suit, and my belt. chalk is always on my hands:). straps i havent used in years, and I wouldnt be sad if i never used them again.

i should add to that, that when i pull for speed i often times leave on whatever equipment i was wearing for my dynamic box squats. and when i pull for speed close to a meet, i pull the straps on the suit up.

Hey Cobra! I like to wear a belt, pretty loose. Lately Ive been using straps cuz I can grip over 700 with chalk and dont feel I need to work on grip strength too much right now. Plus when I use straps my forearms get equally as sore as when I use chalk, cuz Im still squeezing the hell out of it. Also Personally heres the warm-up routine I use. Dont like to do excessive warm ups.

135x10
225X8-10
315X1
405X1
455X1

Then onto max Hope that helps
