what does the "jesus" fish thing stand for?

it originates from a time and a place where christianity was an oppressed minority and functioned as a secret sign for the members to recognise one another or communicate they are christian. it was chosen for its simple shape which can easily be drawn or scratched on anything.

the greek word ichtus meaning fish
is an abbreviation for a statement of belief in the christian god or messiah as well, but i forgot the statement.

Learned this in school-

The initial letters of the Greek phrase "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior" form the Greek word ICHTHUS, which means "fish." This symbol was used by believers in the early days of persecution as a secret sign of their shared faith. One person would draw an arc in the sand, and the other would complete the sign to show his brotherhood in Christ.

To be a "FISHER of MEN"?

Get your money back.

No one was calling Jesus the Son of God while the Christians were being persecuted. Christian persecution is vastly overstated anyway. Remember that the first Christians were Jews, and the romans clamped down on the Jews very hard from 60-70 AD, culminating with the destruction of the Temple in 70.

He wasn't known as the Son of God for several centuries after his death. (Odd huh?)

Christinaity did not become an independent entity until COnstantine and his In Hoc Signo vision. (If you're a Catholic you may have noticed that priests' garments have IHS on them. This is why.

Christianity was defiend and codified initially under Constantine at the Council of Nicaea in 325. There was no "fishy". That came later.
