it originates from a time and a place where christianity was an oppressed minority and functioned as a secret sign for the members to recognise one another or communicate they are christian. it was chosen for its simple shape which can easily be drawn or scratched on anything.

Remember that the first Christians were Jews, and the romans clamped down on the Jews very hard from 60-70 AD, culminating with the destruction of the Temple in 70.

He wasn't known as the Son of God for several centuries after his death. (Odd huh?)

Christinaity did not become an independent entity until COnstantine and his In Hoc Signo vision. (If you're a Catholic you may have noticed that priests' garments have IHS on them. This is why.
