What does it mean when...

I have had this happen before. Like the middle back tightens up and its painful when you breathe. Mine went away as well, but its an odd thing.

Coming from someone who just had 2 lower back discs removed, I can tell you what it might be... you can strain the small muscles of the spine (forget what they are called) that go between each vertebrae and make a web around the spine... and they hurt like a bitch for a day or so then pouf, no pain. (some of these get cut or pushed around during back surgery...) Look at the back bone next time you're eating a chicken breast... those muscles... lol
Another possibility is the muscle/ligament layer between the ribs... hurts like mad for a short time then it goes away... but you'd notice that right away...

My guess? You had a cramp. :)

Well, I'm glad that went away but I have another problem now. Started around 11 tonight, it's now 1:10 AM. My left side, feels like the ribs, hurts...a LOT. I was doing weighted widegrip chinups today, DC style. Slow negatives. I never had a problem with them before, but it's killing me. I'm keeling over every so often. I'm hoping it goes away soon. Any idea what this is? Pulled muscle again? A strain?

Just a crackpot diagnosis, but I'd have a doc check this stuff out... have you had an MRI of your ribcage? It can show up a LOT of minor damage that can come from any odd exertion... When they were hunting down the cause of my back/leg problems, (ended up being a couple of herniations) I had so many MRI's I thought I lived in one of those little plastic tubes... but I know where every one of my little weaknesses are now!
