What do you think the next generation will be like?

Seriously. Every time lately I run into a kid in high school they have some serious deficiencies working against them. Most of them can't spell, write or use proper grammar (if the internet or my college classes are any indication). They are totally dependent on cell phones and the internet, don't seem to want to work to make money and have little to no respect for anyone older than them. They think a lawsuit or a fight is the best way to settle an argument. They can't even speak in coherent sentences most of the time without using slang. And using things like manners or having consideration for others besides themselves is also pretty rare.

I realize I'm generalizing here, but if the majority of teenagers today are like this, what is the world going to be like in 10-15 years when they have grown up and have to enter the workforce? Are we going to have to lower standards continually? Or will the world just adjust to suit their needs and we will be left wondering what happened to real spoken and written words, music that is actually written and not remixed and people who say please and thank you?

People said the same thing about your generation, and theirs, and theirs, and theirs.

This generation is alot more self aware. There is alot more of a sense of global society in the young of today, so I'm sure politics will change because of that. They are far more technologically advanced, and more concerned with personal fulfillment than external rewards and tokens. I think this next generation will do better.

they'll be too lazy to even take the time to get laid. . .certain facets of the human race are certainly doomed. . .

This generation is much more networked and wired. They definately know how to have more fun, and are unwilling to sacrifice quality of life for long-term reward (which isn't always a bad thing).

Their attention spans are much shorter and they don't plan ahead nearly as well as previous generations.

This group will have a lot of fun in the "here and now" and will probably struggle more than ever in their later years.

Yup - the President in 20 years will have a lip ring, nose ring and a tattoo across their face........

 Can't wait!!

I'm avoiding having kids until things start looking up. At least a little. It's getting very difficult to raise kids these days with so much societal red tape and chaotic morals/values. I suppose some of it has to do with location yet though too.

You still wear shoulder pads? Hawt.

This next generation will evolve exactly as we all have evolved throughout time. I am not concerned about it. Generation after generation has always been concerned about thier progeny. The truth is they are going to be DIFFERENT, just like we are different from our predecessors. The world will go on. I beleive the future generations are going to do better than anyone before them. They are much more self-determined, technologically advanced, they question authority and think for themselves. I am happy to see this happeneing and we arnt just giving birth to more "sheeple".

There is some truth to this. Unfortanetly, the majority of this next generation will be selfish, uneducated, sissies with no backbone or sense of right and wrong. Especially the males. Any more every sitcom or TV commercial makes men look like fumbling idiots waiting for their spine donation to show up or a overcompensating woman to tell them what to do and how to do it. I honestly do not feel women really want these types of oversensitive she men.

In other words, we are raising a whole crop of guests for the Jerry Springer show. It's sad really.

Our parents were far less educated than we are. Far more people nowadays have high school and college educations than they did int he 60s and 70s.

This generation has far more knowledge and compassion for global events than the last generation.

People are also more educated because of communication technology. Almost everyone has internet access, cable/satellite tv and cell phones. So people are exposed to far more information.

This is just the age old 'the kids are no good' stuff. Even Aristotle used to bitch about how Greece was doomed when he would look at the kids. What you guys need to realize is that only 1-3% of humans actually make the rules and run society and corporations, the other 97-99% just work in jobs and raise families.

The only thing that bothers me is how insecure and conformist this generation is. It is the opposite of the baby boomers, who were very tolerant of diversity. This generation is full of self hatred and insecurity driven conformity. Your remarks on wimpy men is somewhat true too. And that is going to suck.

the nonconformist/conformist is a good point. I really do think that the vast majority of what people think and feel is considered politically incorrect and therefore is not shown in any of the media outlets. I mean use the gay marriage thing as an example. The vast majority of Americans do not support that and the constant landslide votes for amending state constitutions shows that, and yet thats not a view thats accepted in society or more so the media. If I vote on it thats one thing, but if I state that at my job, I could be sued/fired, etc. for intolerance. So, most people conform to a society that they don't agree with.

One thing I would love to see is a generation that takes political correctiveness and slams the door on it. Free speech is ok as long as it's not racist, or feminist or sexist or (insert your favorite "ist" here) Who knows if that will ever happen.

Right... you're just overlooking the fact that one in five of them can't even read their own high school diplomas.

Grade inflation is rampant. Outcomes-based education is still in place. The previous generation is head-and-shoulders above the current one in hard sciences and engineering. The superlative players are still great, but the day-to-day ones aren't nearly as good.

Yet after three years of war, two-thirds of Americans aged 18-24 cannot find Iraq on a map.

Compassion doesn't equal education. That's part of the failure of education today. It's about feeling-good about yourself instead of hard learning. This is why there are college classes where 80% of the students get A's or B's. A generation ago, you got a trophy when you won the tournamant. Now, you get a trophy for showing-up.

Again, I'd just caution all of us to not assume that "more connected = more educated". Little Timmy can be using his high-speed cable modem to play Quake IV just as easily as he can be using it to learn about the Brazillian rain forrest.

True.

Furthermore, you notice that people are less and less connected to each other? It seems that the co-ops that I see at my company want to get to the top and screw everyone else around.

That's another by-product of American culture. We emphasize the individual and focus less and less on the team. Everyone wants to be the next Jack Welch, Bill Gates, or Warren Buffet. The "company man" died in the US about 30 years ago.
