What are good exercises for bouncing?

JollyRogers

New member
I’m currently doing security at a night club on Saturdays and other places once and awhile,

I was just wondering if there are some specific exercises that would benefit me for this type of job.

actual fighting.........ever been in one?
actual grappling.........ever wrestled anyone for real?
14 inch press.....instead of flat benching
deadlifts....for mass
squats..."
gm's...."
cleans....simulate picking someone up and hoisting them
ohp....throwing someone over your head

a will to get hit & knocked down & still get back up to finish.

Sooner or later you will be called out and tested. your true colors will shine through. What I have listed is all you need. Now get to work.

two of my instructors in judo are cops. They say they use judo all the time during their job. Might want to look into that.

Mass = intimidation
Figthing is mostly arms, may legs for drive & holding people back.

Hams = holding people
Bicep/lats picking people up
Chest/tricep/ant delt pushing and punching
Forearm grip ;)...lets hope it doesn't come to that
Quads = kick

Bench/squat/deads/ohp?

The single most important body part for fighting is midsection by far. You would be surprised as to how much leverage you get from that. A strong midsection makes it much easer to through people around.

Then delts. a strong punch is in the delts and triceps. chest is pretty useless, it is used for bench pressing and not much else.

back is also a very important for any type of heavy labor including wrestling.

do deads, squats(they help with EVERYTHING), bench(power lifter syle, bb has almost no functional strength) OHP, cleans, upright and bent over rows.

Obviously it is better to look invincible first so that you rarely have to fight. i have a very easy time intimidating people because of the way i am proportioned. I only weight 212 but my delts and back make me look allot bigger.

I am gana start learning judo as soon as i find a good school for it since everyone seems to think it helps alot.

It does...ive already been able to apply what ive learned. Some of the throws and takedowns will be hard without a gi but others are quit simple. You also learn some chokes and arm bars that are helpful

Thanks Polish, I have wrestled before, done some Jujitsu but it was long ago, I still know some stuff but nothing crazy, my good bro does the same thing, he has taught me some grappling, those exercises you posted above look good to go, thanks bud

oh ..and Deads ;)

1. knee snatch to the turk
2. overhead extension to the drop down squat
3. double leg to the high arm over
4. low level single
5. foot sweep

those are only a fre that I can think of. . .

I'd imagine the compound movements where you use the most musclegroups.

Squats, Deads, cleans, Push Press, maybe bench, etc ...

I will be serious for a change. . .

Basic compound movements and lots of extra work on the bag. . .also train with someone who has had a background in wrestling.

good idea, I should get a bag, hmmm :D

I also recommend that you learn:

- double legs
- single legs
- firemans carry
- headlocks
- throws
- ankle pics
- foot sweeps

If you have a solid background in strength training, boxing, and wrestling techniques. . .you will become one solid bouncer.

what is a 14 inch press?

is this a rack lockout? possibly for pushing people out the door? not that i have ever bounced (or been bounced), but i would say that working the core muscles with compund excercises as well as working the grip would be beneficial.

Powerlifting + self-defense classes

You might try working out with a keg (shouldering it, carrying it around). You could also get a bag of sand and work with it. I'm not a trained grappler or anything but it seems if these things would help.

Two words.

Stun gun.. jk.. i have a few friends who are bouncers. They say the main part of bouncing really isn't hand to hand combat and stuff. The main idea of bouncing is for the whole security crew to gang up on one guy, pick him up by whatever u can grab and escort him forcefully to the door. If you cannot do it by yourself, thats why you have other people with you. Never fight inside the club, just pick up the guy(s), throw him out and lock the door =). That being said, this normally involves alot of grappling and dragging, as well as grip strength when gripping the clothes of an individual.

Of course there is always the exception which you should be prepared for ie. head to head fisticuffs.

I like wildonsquats reply, usually there is less fighting involved than peope think, also I agree with louden in general, wrestling techniques can come in handy. Most of the toughest SOB's I know have good wrestling background, you can pound on their face and they will never let you go....eventually you get tired and they beat on your face....

My best advices from experience- be fast enough to get out of the way of the drunk a$$ haymaker 99% of them always decide to throw... then throw them in a full nelson and smash their face into every door and brick wall you can find on the way out....

In case you do need to duke it out, strong lifts in the squat, clean push press, and a 400-450lb bench couldn't hurt in your pursuit to turn someones face to hamburger (if they stay on their feet that long)

uhhh guys if you decide to wrestle someone in a crowded area you are pretty much fucked....every time a bouncer gets his ass kicked it is because he goes john waynin and decides that he'll go toe to toe with someone....that is when the guy's drunk friend slices your hamstring tendons with a 2 inch keychain blade while another one jumps on you and chokes you out. Guys don't come into clubs alone....and little guys won't start shit unless they have something on them.

My favorite exercise is the one where i take the oc spray saftey up and squirt it in first idiots eyes.

here are my observations:

carry oc spray

use the other security guys

if you get trapped and have to fight don't fight fair.....there is no referee

never go to the ground

don't follow people to their cars

when in doubt hit first and hit hard then leave it for the other security guards to clean up

this is for pillsbury--- when someone is on the ground and bleeding....don't kick him in the face in front of the owner of the club....lol

I bounced for two and a half years in college. I threw one punch the entire time and that got me a thrid degree assault ticket. The best thing to work out is your people skills. Being big and strong doesn't do much if you don't know how to use it. The main thing to remember is attitude is everything if you don't take shit people will learn to stop trying to give it to you.

Oops, my post was misconstrued... my thoughts on wrestling were more for brawling in general...

IL- I totally agree with this in that you should assume all fights are unfair and to know where your help is. I know a few guys that were hot headed and got dragged into a corner or outside being toughguys and ended up in the hospital w/ or w/o puncture wounds.... We never had sprays (most of the places I worked at did not allow it) or headsets to call each other or anything, though (this was 4-5 years ago)

To add to the other guys comment, it helps to know who you have with you when your workig, once I got stuck working at the door with a new guy and 3 guys got into it with us...anyway, he froze up (literally- never seen anything like it, he was like catatonic) and I was facing 3 idiots by myself....

For the most part I agree with Scots, work on your people skills, and be consistent with people, nice but don't take crap.... And like I said, be quick enough to get out of the way....

Though some here have probably done the bar brawl thing, keep in mind most of the people that will go at it with bouncers are either wasted, stupid, or dangerous from any combination of those and other factors, so the less time you spend mixed up with them the better for you....

Hmm..interesting comments.

People skills/communication is the best thing you can work on, if you are going to be a 'bouncer'. Talking people down from altercations is an art, in a sense. Also depends on who your nightclub caters too. Hells Angels, Viets, etc....pfftt...no amount of fighting skills gonna help you there, well not the next night at least :).

Oh, my best advice for a new doorman, be a lazy doorman. Dont fight unless absolutely necessary. Do not be one of those bloody cowboy jerks trying to wind up every argument into a brawl so you can prove how tough you are.

I remember once when I first started there was this reknown doorman guy. You know 'Joe blow is the toughest son of a bitch out there.', blah blah. So this guy picks a fight with this pretty big dude. They square off, and Joe 'tough guy' slips on some ice (winter in canada), falls on the ground and gets kicked full in the neck, went into a coma for 3 months or so.

Takes just one bad move and you are done. Really get a bar tending job.

Here is my common perception of a bouncer. . . .A 6'4" behemoth with a bald head, with 20 inch arms, who knows how to throw down.

I am being humurous. . . . . I wouldn't fuck with these guys.

Being a successful bouncer is not about how well you can kick someones ass, it's about how well you can diffuse a potentially bad situation. The best bouncers don't HAVE to fight.

I remember reading and interview with Michael Clark Duncan. He said that when he was a bouncer he rarely fought anyone. he said that when some drunk gets pissed off you just lower your voice and he normally lowers his without even realizing what he is doing. Once you do that you can calm him down pretty easy.

Well Said! I been bouncing for about 3years now & I have only had to remove a customer a couple time. The key is to keep your eye open & stop a sitution before it starts....

Oh by the way GIRLS are the worst! They

Girl's are the worst to deal with. "Don't touch me", "I'm not going anywhere you asshole", etc. Guys get the idea that it's time to leave much faster then the girl's do. Especially the red neck women, yikes. What to do with a 240 lbs girl who want to fight you? That is the question.

one of my friends dad used to be a bouncer and his midsection is so hard you can seriously hit him with a pool cue and hed barly feel it. and this was like 20 years ago.

definatly get the midsection rock hard so you can just walk through people. this guys nuts.

Besides find a 300lb girl to fight her? lol

ahhh shit come and train with me or Thaibox we'll teach ya how to fight....

All olympic lift for explosive power, buffet for mass and tons of fighting and wrestling.....

most of all just be so insane if yoy get hit you laugh like a mad man and then tear them to pieces

Biggest doorman I have seen was about 6'5" and well fat as hell, maybe 400lbs?

Funniest doorman I ever met was a 'lifer'. He was 37 and did it part time. Best part was he was studying to be a pastor. He had this funny habit of lightly punching the front door.

BAM...BAM....BAM... "Hey jims, do you ever think about god?"... BAM....BAM...BAM...."We are having this seminar this Sunday for new church members"....BAM...BAM...BAM.

Bloody funny guy!!!

Need a big bertha bouncer for backup in case those redneck gurls get outta hand, thats the answer !

:D

hey, i was thinking of getting into bouncing as a part time job to support myself in college ( tuition is payed by loans ). Where is a good place to start off where not too much trouble starts so i can learn the ropes and everything???

there was a bouncer at a club in philly i went to a few times, about 6'8", not huge but imposing. long hair, serious scowl, also had a berretta tucked into his back pocket. friend of mine referred to him as 'the yeti'. when this guy stepped into the fray the antics stopped.

Scotsman had the best advice. I was a bouncer for my first 2 years of college.

There are three things to know about being a good bouncer: NEVER EVER EVER EVER HIT THE PERSON. You will get sued and the club will pretend like they never knew you.

Always have back up: Don't go into a situation alone. Always have back up. If some big guy starts bragging about how it will take 4 or 5 guys to get him out of there FINE. Get 4 or 5 guys and carry his ass out unhurt. This will also keep you from getting sucker punched (which I've seen a lot).

Work on people skills (Like Scotts said!): Avoid every possible fight that you can. Looks bad for the club, looks bad for the owner and security. Also, when you do talk to someone that you need to confront, talk like you're an Italian. A lot of bouncers I've talked to say that you're supposed to keep your hands folded behind your back (So you don't present the body language of "wanting to fight") but that's bullshit. You'll get sucker punched or you won't be ready in a situation. Talk with your hands, wave them around and make gestures like you're flamboyantly gay. Who cares? You still appear to be non-threatening and your hands are still right up in front of you.

Also, get a bigger wallet for all the phone numbers you're gonna take home :)

Hey sinjin, do you remember what club you saw this guy at? I'm in the Philly area and I remember some really big guy as well. It's bugging me that I cannot remember where it was.

ffknight84- If you are in school, just find some place that is convenient to you.... If you actually like going to the bar, it would be better obviously... Just call or walk in some afternoon (usually the managers are stocking or recieving deliveries) and talk to a manager... bouncers have a pretty high turnover (crappy pay, crappy job), so it should not be hard to find a gig....

c3ntrifug3-"talk like an Italian" don't take this as being confrontational, but what is that supposed to mean? But otherwise pretty decent advice for the most part...

I would not be so sure to think the biggest bouncer is always the best. A guy I knew in college (cool kid from NY about 215lbs) took apart 3 285-300lb offensive linemen outside the bar (this was one of the more prolific BigTen schools) AT THE SAME TIME, including putting a HUGE dent in a random car with one of their heads... One of the more impressive displays I've seen in my days...

Hey Becoming,

Can you give details about this scrape? Was this guy a grappler or a boxer or something? Or, was he just a natural butt-kicker.

Cochise- Basically, the kid was inside the bar with the three linemen, some kind of crap happened and they all ended up outside. (I heard that part from my friends who I was meeting there) As I recall (though I had put down more than a few at that time, I worked at a different bar then he did and was coming up to the bar he was working at for some drinks just as it went down....) the first guy rushed him and the kid like tripped him and threw him head first into the side of the car putting a huge dent in it.... that guy was done in about .5 secs

I think the second guy he jacked face then gut and gave him the bigtime knee to the face... he was done too

The last guy he traded a couple blows with (the big guy was too slow to land anything good) and smacked him face first into front quarter of the car a couple times right on the seam where it won't dent easy and he was done too.

The guy who was the bouncer there was a cool bro, used to see him at the gym about 50% of the time, and had the same friends/parties, etc. that dude from what I know never really used weights just did pushups and pullups and running etc, but he was a tough hombre....

I love these stories!! Have any more?:fro:

hehee sorry, that was a little bit ambiguous.

Talk with your hands, as I explained. Make gestures non-threateningly. You know how the stereotypical Italian talks? Making lots of hand gestures, animating his or her words. It's a good way to do things because it can

A: Help communicate what you mean to someone that is inebriated

B: Allow you to appear non-threatening while still having your hands up in front of you.

Just something that I found worked pretty well.

Chokes and arm-bars work great, but use them sparingly and never to excess. Seriously, I'm not sure how bad things are in Canada, but in the states you hurt someone and your ass is fried with a 1000 dollar simple assault law suit.

Road House this is not.
