condom isn't gonna necessarily stop the transmission of herpes either

super douchey he knows he has herpes and didn't fill her in though. ("fill her in" probably isn't the best terminology here is it)

If there are sores, then yes condoms are not a full proof way to stop transmission, but if there are no open sores, then the risk is lower but there is always shedding.

This has actually made me really angry. My friend is really important to me and I want to tell her. I was thinking maybe telling her a lie and saying he is seeing another girl on the side and is famous for not using condoms so tell her to please use one.

You could just say he is famous for not using condoms and suggest she use one w/o saying he is seeing someone else on the side. That way you don't get in trouble with either one.
