Weird response to green tea.

I am prone to depression and have been on Paxil for six years, so I didn't think much about it when I started getting depressed last month. This depression was definitely physiological in nature and not situational. Interestingly, the depression lifted when I had to be out of town for five days, but returned a few days after I got home. Two weeks later I was out of town again, and again my depression lifted. Unfortunately, it returned again a few days after I got home.

Paxil generally controls my mood swings, so I couldn't understand WTF was going on. Then I remembered that during both trips out of town, I forgot to take my green tea caps with me. I have since been experimenting and have realized that when I take the caps, I get depressed, when I go off, the depression disappears.

Anyone else have this reaction, or am I just a freak? :worried:

I dunno if you are a freak or not. (nothing wrong with being a lil freaky) :)
I drink green tea every night after dinner. I make a double strength cup using two tea bags for 8 ozs. of water. I notice nothing other than I like it and hopefully the antioxidents will do me good in the long run.

Stop taking it for a few weeks and see what happens.

hi. go to your local pharmacy and have a chat to the pharmacist, and get him to log it as a potential drug interaction.

yes your green tea caps ahve the potential to affect your condition. they may interfere wth the paxil or another physiological process. you just dont know what its doing, but yes, tis possible, and no, youre not a freak

either that or youre subconciously aware that green tea is a load of expensive shit and its depressing you subliminally ;)

I agree with GD.

Also from my own experience not specifically with GT although I do take it right now
in large quantities. There are some bizzare very rare interactions of several supplement
drugs for some people. When a drug company (not to talk about supplement companies!) make a drug tolerance test, they test houndreds of people, but sometimes that 'side effects' you may be experience is one to a thousdand or more rare. Remember I'm talking about drugs, when you talk about certain supplements it may even more true.

I found out that I personally had a bizzare experience with Ginger root (not 100% certain) but let's say that I was once on a cycle with nothing but aromatase drugs (estrogen raising) and 25mg of aromasin a day along with 100mg of nolvas for over two weeks did totally zero to get rid off. I was taking about 30 capsules of ginger through that time to help with protein digestion. I though one day that would probably be a very big dose and may interact with the Aromasin and/or Nolva. I stopped taking the ginger completely. The symtoms disappeared from 100% intense to ZERO in 1-2 days (After being 100% constantly with no marked decrease for over 2 weeks). Go figure. Might be something with prostaglandin interfernece or something. You never really know. We dudes, take lots of supplements..

I hear you man, I am not prone to depression but have have other psycological effects from green tea. I traveled this weeked as week. Also, I did not bring my green tea along. I felt amazingly good. I have known for a while that my green tea makes me feel kinda fucked up, but I have continued to take it at relatively high doses becuase of the great fat loss results i see with high EGCG content. However, when i take the green tea concentrate I feel totally disconnected from everything. I cant think straight, i feel generally dumber (cant think of easy words i am trying to use in a convo or while typing), and makes me quite tired. I am thinking about stopping the green tea, and really seeing how good i can feel upon its cessation.

it is possible. EGCG (and other tea polyphenols) are inhibitors of 5a reductase. DHT is a strong CNS affecting androgen, and lowered levels in your case may exacerbate your depression.

though in others it may have the opposite effect (or none noticeable)

you likely have low levels of 5a already and/or low test.

not just you i get really deprssed on gt. i thought i was the only one... i used the caps from the company green tea diet, it costed my six bucks...the deprssion on that shit was bad

Oh great. Didn't know that one. I guess a great addition to my anti-hairloss systemic 5a reductase stack (Dutasteride, Saw Pelmetto)

This is an interesting thread.
kbrkbr and guvna keep us (and me) updated. I have a history of depression problems
especially when dieting. Don't want to get any problems with the GT. So far so good.
Still... interesting experiences that are often not talked about.

Interesting thread. I have been drinking the tea and taking the pills too. Not sure if I have encountered depression from it or not. Like everyone else I too get depressed. I may take some time off to see what happens.
Good Post.

it is more likely with low grade green tea extracts and brewed green tea that caffiene may be the culprit.

though then again it could be wholely some other aspect of the tea or merely the traveling itself that alleviated your depression (which is common)

No, I don't think that's it. I can't tolerate stimulants of any kind, so I was careful to buy the extract that's less than 1% caffeine.

This last bit of travel was to attend the funeral of a college buddy, so I don't think that was it.

I've become extremely in tune with my depression and can tell when it's situational or physiological. The feeling I get from green tea is very much the latter.

Thanks for responding macro. I have great respect for you insight.

I don't have much assignment work this month, so I think I'll experiment a bit and then report back in a few weeks.
