Weird Pain Keeping Me From Working Out

I am 6'1 170 and almost 30. I used to work out religously, but in the past 2-3 years I have been struggling balancing my schedule to work out and have honestly just been off and on and going through the motions.

Recently (about 2 months ago) I really got back into it! I have always roamed message boards and tried to educate myself and train properly. I have been doing a workout routine training 3x per week and compound movements only. HIIT 2-3x per week on non-training days. I have been getting stronger than I have been in a while and feeling good.

Then all of a sudden Monday last week, I have this pain in both shoulders especially when doing bench or dips and also when doing pullups. I have the pain in both shoulders and its not like an injury pain, but more like an overtraining pain. It only hurts during the sets and a minute or two after. I had this pain even with light weight warming up and sure couldnt lift heavy. So I stopped and went home, waited a few days and went back and the same freaking thing. I quit and didnt workout that day once again. Well I chalked it up too overtraining once again and waited a week and the same freaking thing today. I had to quit.

Its weird because it doesnt hurt when doing normal activities, but let me start lifting some weights (not even heavy) and the pain seemed worsr today than the first time I felt it.

I don't know what to do.

Best advice is always to rest an injury. If you can afford to see a Physical Therapist or a Chiropractor go do it. Also, training compounds 3x a week (assuming you are squatting multiple times a week) tends to lead to some injuries if you aren't stretching adequately, and getting rubbed-out. You are 30, so you have to respect that.

Shoulder pain where exactly? Where in the press does it hurt, and how bad? Posture is a big culprit of shoulder issues (it caused mine!) and if you are getting stronger in your chest and shoulders and not in your upper back you can have an imbalance that literally causes a shoulder issue (like tendenosis,or a minor tear).

I will dig up a link or two for some stretches and an article on bb.com that really helped me. I had some shoulder stuff that caused me to stop pressing for over a month and I rehabbed w/ out a PT (except for the lovely Treilin, but she is not for hire...) and am right as rain...for now of course...if I don’t stretch daily and do RC work 4x per week my shoulders act up again.

it hurts in the front and is more like a cramp, plus it hurts equally on both sides and maybe radiates down both arms too. what are the odds of injuring both shoulders at the same time? shoot it could be mental thing, althought the pain is def real. Its not severe pain, its more just lots of discomfort and feels like i am doing more harm than good if i press on.

I had the same problem with my left shoulder when I started back up again after a couple years layoff. I felt like crap because I wanted to get back into lifting but I knew if I kept going it could eventually lead to an injury, so I just held my training off for awhile. This was in the beginning of December and I started back up again in the beginning of January. I just made sure I stretched thoroughly before working out and now I feel great. But if you still feel the pain even after taking time off and then starting your workouts again assuming you include the stretching, then ya', go see a chiro on it and make sure it isn't a tissue issue.

If it hurts, stop it, let it rest and slowly go back to doing whatever it was that caused pain.

Trust me, I have injured a bicep, both knees, elbows etc

However, by stopping and taking care of the injury, they have never actually became serious.
