Weightlifting Belts

I have had several minor back strains throughtout the years and was thinking if i should were a weightlifting belt buring my workouts as a procaution. What are the pros and cons of doing this. Any help is great.
 
Pros:
you will have support
you could probably lift heavier in the gym

Cons:
its false support
doesn't actually fix the weakness
actually widens the margin of strength and natural stability
you may reinjure yourself even with a belt on because of your strength increases and confident increases in weight lifted.

what does your current ab and lower back routine look like?
how flexible are you in your lower body and lower back?

there is a way to lift beltless ALWAYS, but it takes some specific work to strengthen your core. its extra work, but makes it so you don't injure yourself picking up a box wrong, sneezing at the wrong angle or something silly like that. trust me, when your core is detrained, it happens easy.
 
i think you need to go back and focus on why your back is hurting, and what lifts may be contributing to them ... and fixing those lifts. it will take a while to build up the strength AND confidence, but it will pay off.

i have never lifted with a belt (don't own one), and will likely never lift with one, even on heavy backsquats/fronts squats and c&j..
 
a belt will not prevent an injury. it will only help you to maintain stability in your core while lifting by allowing you to push your abdomin against the belt
 
I only use a belt for my heaviest sets; the other times I take it off or wear it so loosely it doesn't do anything (except prevent me from losing it)
 
Ever had physical therapy before or seen it. What do they do when trying to rehab a person? They get that person back doing what ever activities they normally do as fast as possible and to the point where they don't any type of assistance or crutch.
