Is there any way that doing intense weightlifting would cause or increase the risk of balding in a genetically susceptible individual?

Only if said "intense" weightlifting involved large quantities of certain steroids. Otherwise, no, you can't force hair out of head by lifting heavy weights.

but doesn't weightlifting increase DHT?

Squats and other heavy, compound movements can raise free testosterone levels slightly I believe, so I suppose this could translate into maybe an extra hair falling out every four years. What I am trying to say is that I really don't thikn you need to worry about it.

I remember reading in an issue of muscle and fitness probably 7-8 years ago that the reader and letter writer was almost practically bald and started going to the gym and working out regularly and all his hair grew back.

Now there is a very good chance that it was a made up reader, or a giant idiot of a reader, but a part of me would like believe that for a certain small minority of the population this is actually possible :)

Some people go bald, some people don't.....some people who lift weights go bald some people who lift weights don't go bald. And that's about what it boils down too.
