Weighted pull-ups

When should you consider adding weight ?

When you can perform 8, 10, 15, 20 or more bodyweight pull-ups ?

i started adding weight at around 10... use your discretion i guess, and chinups should be like any other exercise, add weight accordingly

I believe in adding weight fairly early.... after you can do one set of 7-8 reps bodyweight, strict form.

You'll be surprised at the nice little boost in body weight reps shortly after adding weight.

important note klown made about form..

whatever reps you do, don't just bang them out, get the most out of your money, do each rep after a dead hang.

dude in my gym adds weight to his pullups. i've seen him hang 70lbs on the chain and do 4 or 5 pullups. just amazing to see him do it. he's got a weight "advantage" though. i don't think he weighs more than 135lbs. he puts some feirce intensity into those pullups though. too bad the dude don't work legs, at least not that i've ever seen.

wait, college gym. nevermind, no one works legs in there.

i get 10-12 out on the first set unweighted and then add 20 pounds to my second set and get around 6. Even is you just add 5 pounds it will make a difference.

This may or may not be necessary. I've hard of guys suffering various injuries from hanging too low while a lot of weight was strapped on.

Myself, I go down about 90-95%, and my back has had no problems growing. :)

Just my 2 cents.

I think when you can do 3 sets of 10 then you are about ready to add some of that weight around ya

I started with about 10 body weight. I don't really do them anymore but I use to do (attempt) four sets of ten with decreasing weight - 30, 10, 10, bodyweight.

I've also heard than going too low puts much strain on the shoulders

yeah if you think about it logically

if you're hanging, and you release all other muscle tension besides in your hands at the bottom of a rep, you're hanging your whole bodyweight minus the weight of your arms off yer shoulder socket!

I don't see a problem with going down pretty much all the way though as long as you keep the tension in your back muscles at the bottom of the rep

I started out doing 4x6 or 7 at the begining of the semester (Jan) without weight. I am currently at 4x16 without weight. Should I continue to 4x20 or would it be more benificial to at weight and so like 4x6 or 8? I have seen major growth since Jan and still get great pumps. Thanks Bros

You're already crossing the border for endurance at that point. Probably have, actually. Start adding some weight. A pump means shit.

i don't think going all the way down is bad for you. if you go all the way down just for a pause and right back up again, you should be fine. this, however, is how i was taught to do them and i can't do them any other way. the motion doesn't seem complete for me otherwise.

If you've seen major gains than I wouldnt fix what aint broke yet. Wait until the gains dry up. I would then add enough weight to allow 12 reps and try to work back up. I think when the weight is TOO heavy on chins that form suffers and the lats arent as involved. I do all of mine very strict - even though I cant do that many - back arched/chest out, trying to touch my collarbone to the bar
