hi, ive recently got a losing weight book,so i know about the nutrition and cardio side of things, but im confused about which weight lifting routine i should follow, ive heard the 5 times 5 routine is popular,if u was to recommend a book/ebook on this subject which is the best one for definition and leaness.

thanks

I posed the same question last week and was told it doesnt matter. Diet is the major factor on losing fat, not your training routine, I decided to stay on a "maintainance" 5x5 routine during cutting.

The best routine is probably a 5x5 type routine (that's 3 days of weights per week) plus doing cardio on every non-weight day. Diet should contain a negative as opposed to positive calorie balance; something like 250-500 calories less than required for stasis. This will equate to about 0.5-1lb a week of weight loss, mostly fat.

Exactly, if you've been bulking up (or not) and you want to drop bodyfat %, then 70% (roughly) is diet. Don't just cut your cals in half, that will cause you to lose muscle and strength, but do it gradually. You should be eating 5-6 smaller meals each day, of good clean food, this helps, as well. Cut about 300-500 cals per day for a week or so, then do it again for another week or so, etc. Eating 10-12 times your bodyweight in cals per day is usually to maintain your weight. To lose, you must eat below that. If the intake of cals is more than you burn - weight gain and vice versa. Safe weight loss is 2-4 pounds per week. Lift weights hard during this time so you don't lose too much strength.
Hope this helps.

I think tom venuto's "burn the fat feed the muscle" aka the bffm ebook is an excellent choice. http://www.burnthefat.com/

Lots of good information on cutting. Probably not what you want to follow, but a lot of information that is applicable none the less.

another good training log for 2005 (it is huge, but Bunny has made remarkable progress. page 137 contains updated pics, page 1 has the before pics). http://www.elitefitness.com/forum/showthread.php?t=371258&page=1&pp=20
