Let's talk FACTS. First, marijuana(hemp) was prohibited by the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937. Reason: it posed a threat to big business. NOT because it was bad for you.
Now, the research availabe to date states, in no particular order:
The effects of THC(the chemical which makes you high)range from euphoria and relaxation to anxiousness. From the various studies that have been done on marijuana, there has emerged evidence for marijuana having positive medical effects on people. Throughout history, cannabis has been a plant that has been used for medicinal purposes all over the world.
In the Chinese culture, one of the early medicinal uses of hemp was for "absent-mindedness." Shen Nung, the "father of husbandry," who probably lived some time between 3494 and 2657 B.C. experimented with cannabis for its drug potential. In his pharmacological book, he wrote that hemp should be prescribed for "female weakness, gout, rheumatism, malaria, beriberi, constipation, and absent-mindedness."
Marijuana has many positive effects, such as increasing ones appetite, relieving pain, controlling nerve spasm's in MS patients, decreasing intraocular pressure which eases the pain of glaucoma, and on and on.
The negative effects are known to be short term memory lapses and the inherent danger of smoke inhalation.
All in all, there is not a single body of evidence on earth which makes a compelling case to ban marijuana, for medicinal OR recreational use.
Just because something is illegal doesn't mean it SHOULD be illegal. Anyone who simply accepts bad law without question is UNAMERICAN.
