and I blame Pharmaceutical outsourcing and also all you damn Brits...

Well, at least all you Liverpoolers..

:)

Haven't had the flu since I was little and this year I probably will.

And when I do, I'm gonna come up in here and PM some infected
snot to all of you.

.

It's Liverpudlian and don't you forget it.

I think they only prevent 1 specific type of flu. And plus, the innoculation is based on a viral projection (what they think it will look like). Do bodybuilders even get sick that often?

OH NO!! The world is ending!!!

You mean.. you may actually have to let your immune system do its job??!??!!

LOL bro.. I have NEVER gotten a flu shot.. been all over the world. I think the longest Ive ever had the flu was 2 days.

Flu shots are a joke.

Exactly. They base it off trends and guess which stran of influenza will cause the most probs

What is there to believe or not believe about flu shots ?
Do you not believe it helps to prevent active infection ?

Yes I'm letting my Immune system do its job by making anti bodies to the
4 most prevalant strains of the flu that are contained in the shot each year.
How else is it gonna do its job. Traveling to asia in the summer to lick 4 infected people ?

Or should I get the Flu for real from an active individual and get very sick so it can do the same thing ?
But next year when the strain is different, my Immune system will not work against it ?

I'm not a believer in putting a virus ("dead" or not) into my body in the interest of theoretically preventing an infection I may or may not contract.

I haven't gotten the flu since I was a kid, and frankly, I don't worry about it.

I think a lot of it is hype by the media (THE FLU KILLED 57 PEOPLE THIS YEAR) and they're largely unnecessary.

Plus, even though it's supposedly not possible, I had a flu shot one time, and it made me sick. So, nevermore.

Agreed.

I've never had the flu - ever.

I have severe allergies (all kinds - I'm a freak) and I went for the shots to help "build immunity" to those allergies. After 20 weeks all I got for it was tender, black and blue arms andwhat I never thought possible - I felt worse than I had when I started. The doctor did the prick test after the whole miserable ordeal and the only improvement was with cat dander. But that was only because I had gotten a cat and it took time for me to get used to his dander.

So, if you think of flu strains like cat dander and no one cat are alike.

You get the picture....

To each their own though, if getting a flu shot gives you confidence for the season go for it - if you can find one.

flu vaccines pretty much pointless in my eyes.....i don't get em.

and like velveeta said, they are pretty much guessing at which strain of flu os going to hit hardest each year.....

OK I understand the first one on not Wanting it in you.. your choice.

As to the making you sick, dead viruses can't make you sick. At least not with the Flu..
I've never gotten sick in years since they stopped using the weakened virus and went to dead. Interesting note is that the nasal vaccine still used live virus so they say you may get a weak bout of illness..

As to the deaths.. 36,000
Below is for 2003.. Mostly old people but still not all.

The U.S. death toll surged fourfold from 16,263 in 1976-77 to 64,684 in 1998-99, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. Flu deaths now average about 36,000 a year, up from 20,000 in previous estimates, the CDC said.

It's entirely possible that the last time I got sick from the shot, it was a weakened virus, not dead, I dunno. Couldn't even begin to tell you how long ago it was.

But here's my question...as I understand it, once a virus is resident in your body, it never goes away, it's simply suppressed. So why would you want to deliberately introduce a virus into your body? Or am I retarded here?

I wonder how the population increase percentage correlates to that increase in deaths.

And are you really worried about dying from the flu?

The original virus is not present forever with the flu, but the anti bodies your body produces to destroy it do hang around. The anti bodies that are created aren't always there forever but some are lifelong in low levels and when activated ramp up quickly. Tetnas would be an example of antibodies that must be renewed every few years.

Measles, Mumps etc antibodies may be with you for your lifetime.

If you are a normal healty young person you don't have to get a shot as you will likely only get sick for a few days. Those young, old, and in contact with them should get one as you may have complications from the flu that could be deadly.
Most of the 36,000 died of complications not the actual flu..

I get one because I am constantly in contact with both my Mom and Mom in law that are 70+ and my daughter has asthma...

Getting sick from a vaccine is pretty normal. I don't think they're alive, most people get sick from vaccines because of an overactive immune system. Most symptoms you get from illness are not caused by the virus directly, it's mostly the shit your leukocytes release.
I'd get a flu shot if I had access to it, I wouldn't care either way. Although getting flu class A would really suck, even if young.

Y, it is a good idea for you to get it, a lot of people get sick from their kids...but it's mostly common colds.

Antibodies never really go away but yeah, the more you have the more they can get their ass into gear. Acquired immunity is great

to those who say they have never had the flu....do they mean the flu (i.e. really bad)...or do they mean they have never had a cold/sore throat/sniffles

over here people use the flu as a blanket term for the cold as well so im curious...
either way i usually get 1-2 colds a year but fight them off very quickly...diet and excercise is what i attribute it too...more diet. all the vitamins in the world wont stop u contracting it, only fight it off faster. Flujabs do stop u getting it...u can bet a flu virus in China will eventually hit the US

and its liverpudlian :)
