water?

why is it so important to drink so much damn water when you lift? Also when trying to eat alot to bulk, am I suppose to eat a ton even days that I don't lift.

Dehydration is an issue for most people actually, but why a whole gallon? Surely you don't need that just to be hydrated.

1) Accelerates your body's metabolism - so it gets you leaner.
2) Running that much water through your system helps to flush lactose from your muscles so you recover faster.
3) Helps to more thoroughly and completely flush out other toxins in your body.

On non-workout days you can eat somewhat less carbs but maintain the high protein and fat levels as you aren't using as much energy. You can still go running, however.

Water seems like a good idea. Sound in theory. Ive never drank much at all though. I try to drink a decent amount when Im in the gym, but thats about it.

Pretty much anytime anything happens inside your body, water is being used. So think of all the little processes involved with training and muscle building. Protein synthesis, flushing out toxins, building new muscle, all of that requires water. So if you don't drink enough, you're not going to get the most out of your training.

The main reason is because dehydration leads to increase sympathetic nervous system stimulation. This shifts the "cross-over point" (Point at which you start burning more carbs than fat) to a lower intensity. So, while dehydrated, at any given intensity you'll be burning more carbs than fat.
