water intake whilst training

when i train in the gym i hardly see many people drinking water, i would say about 10% of people have a water bottle. I always drink while training approx 3 pints every time. Is this a good thing?

Should you drink while training? or leave it to before? or after?

I usually go through at least a liter each workout, but I agree with you....I very rarely see others carrying around a bottle or go to the fountain.

I drink about a 1/2 gallon in the gym.....and most others that are more serious about training have water at our gym.

There's that old saying 'If you wait til you're thirsty to drink water, you're already dehydrated'. Or something like that.

I think the general guideline is 20-40oz per hr of exercise.

Yeah, I'm the same as rb.

Being hyper-hydrated helps your ability to generate power and produce strength over time = heavier weights and more reps. I drink at least a pint (1/8th gallon) before a workout and then about more 1/8ths throughout the workout.

PS I bring my own water - I see some idiots paying $2 for a 16oz bottle every workout! Thats 8 bucks a week or $400 a year!

I drink constantly through a workout. I also drink before I leave for the gym so my first gym activity is a trip to the bathroom. One of these days I'll get stuck in a traffic jam and then I'm in trouble.

I hadn't really thought about it but there are typically very few people with water at the gym. I'm always sipping between sets but I have leaky skin. Very few people there have a towel either.

I carry a 1.5 litre bottle with me everywhere I go, like it's almost glued to my hand. I top it up at the water fountain in the gym and probably get through about 2 litres / 4 pints during a workout. If they had a toilet near the workout area I'd probably drink a lot more.

Everyone else I see just sips out of the paper cups supplied by the gym. I don't know how they drink so little.

I love the posers who carry the 1 gallon milk container full of water. I'm all for staying hydrated but it's just funny to see them chug what appears to be half their body weight in water after a grueling set of cable cross-overs.

They're the guys who will do anything do increase their weight.

Anything except squat, deadlift and eat to excess.

on the days i take a bottled water, i refill it 4-5 times. otherwise i hit the fountain for a bellyfull every 3rd set

I drink some water during my rest period all the time, whether i am thirsty or not, as you do i drink about 3-4 pints during my training (which sometimes only last 1 hour, or less sometimes)

I drink accelerade during my workouts. Usually about 20oz, but I sometimes stop at the fountains inside the weight room too.
