the 716 was a "static" division populated with the weakest of the pool
kinda a cannon fooder division

and face dozens of soviet tanks

post up the wittman account of his tank in caen fighting the brits...didnt he kill 30 or so tanks in one swing basically?

as the situation for Germany became more desperate he became less sound
over-extending the 6th army at stalingrad was boo koo bad
 
I have a bunch of WWII/German stuff at home including airborne helmet, SS cammo. I never cared about allies garbage.

I believe the best piece of equipment the germans had was the mighty Sturmgewehr 44 assault rifle. Most likely the best weapon for CQB/urban warfare. Their tanks were great but too slow.

People here are discussing about technical details (weapons, warfare tactics...) not about crimes of war, genocide or others. As much as I dislike communists, I wouldnt mind discussing how great the T-34 tanks were or the Red Army tactics.

When did I say you shouldn't talk about them? The thread title itself is offensive, it wants to praise the SS. Talking about their weapons is fine, doing so without mentioning the crimes they committed is wrong.


But, I'm doing what I use to do as a mod., talking to a brick wall. Ya'll have fun playing war.

Ok I'll make some wuss happy and post a cool pic of some German Paratrooper jumping over Holland. Btw the Falschirmjager were not part of the SS units. COmpletely different and better training.

So true. Bought one 15 years ago at a flea market. Some guy was getting rid of his german collection because his new wife was so against any Nazi items at home. Paid around $40 back then. Never tried to sell it but it's good to know that I screwed up someone at the age of 12.... lol And you're right about WWII helmets. It took me forever to sell them at a decent price (which was around $35...).

Yep, they were Luftwaffe formations and after Crete were never used again in their role, they became an elite "fire brigade."

So you equate US, British, and Canadian forces to Nazi war criminals. I'm sure that a lot of veterans on this board would be interested to know that an elite mod on this board feels this way.

Amazing how Nazis are the only group in history that cause so many people to lose their heads in a discussion on the topic. It's like Germany gets left with the rest of the world's guilt trip. Must be tough to even breathe over there.

Btw, ask any Native how he/she rates the behavior of the Federal troops back in the 19th century and you'll get the picture. War crime material according to them. Same goes for any real south american native about the spanish Conquistadores.

Why don't you do yourself a favor. Go into that room where you keep your Nazi war toys, and keep telling yourself that you're not like them. You might not wear a uniform, but I have a feeling that you would be very comfortable in 1940's Germany.

When I see someone posting about hate, no matter how they pretty they try to wrap itup, I rfeel it is my place to point out that hate. Much like I use to do in real life when I would see little boys like you thinking they were bad asses, picking on someone who was a different color. The funny thing is they would only do that when they out numbered the person they went after, and even then, the person had to be much weaker, usually an older, frail person. Then when a healthy male stood up they would scatter like cock roaches.

you should also file a complient with the history channel since a large portion of their shows are about Nazi germany in WW2 and a large portion regarding the waffen ss. it is interesting thats why it is always on! the average viewer of those programs on PBS and the history channgel are usually skin heads tivo shows like "weapons of the waffen ss" or "operation barborosa" or the show "battlefield" almost the entire program is from the german point ..


go to barnes and nobles as well and remove any books regarding the waffen ss too :rolleyes:

appreciating the Waffen SS' ability in combat is not the same thing as celebrating Nazis.. a lot of the Waffen SS had nothing to do with concentration camps and many of them found the treatment of Jews very distasteful.


But you'd have to know something about history to know that.

A close friend of mine had a grandfather in the Waffen SS and wrote a first person account of his war stories.. he spent so much time at the front and had only heard through others what was happening back home. Many of his fellow soldiers were in the same boat he was.
 
Is there a list of equipment (standard) that SS paratroopers were given to strap on / carry before their jumps?

I read one time that the Allies paratroopers ended up with like 40 pounds of gear straped to them.

Most of the time it would include: rifle, grenades (paratroopers were among the few to be issued the egg shapped), shovel, ammo, gas mask in leather bag instead of the regular metal cannister, flares and thats about it. Very minimal stuff.

most likely rear guard 16 year old boys who got spooked
you don't leave your best troops in the rear with the POWs
Peiper's kambgruppe captured plenty of other GI's and when he got surrounded and was suffering heavy allied artillery bombardment the GI POWS were in the same buildings with the krauts
in other words they recieved the same protection as their captors
