Using a belt

been only doing this a year but have a question
If you enter the gym wearing a belt keep it on through warm ups, cardio and through all exercises is this effective . There is this guy who does it . Want to tell him it is stupid. Knowing he would get mad cause i am sure i can kick his ass,.:fro: :fro:

I am from the old school that says wearing a belt takes away from the stabilizer muscles, abs, and back. I think that it is used as a crutch more than anything. The only time I wear a belt is if I am squatting heavy and don't have a spotter, and then it's just for my protection. I certainly don't understand why he wears a belt through cardio?!?!?!? That doesn't make any sense to me.

this is kinda like those people who wear gloves while doing abs and cardio. do people think that since they are in the gym they automatically have to have this gear? no matter what they are doing?

I have seen people leaving with their belts on; even after they've gotten into their cars. Heh, have seen 'em wearing their belts while grocery shopping.

I guess groceries can get pretty heavy. :)

Back when I trained at 24 hour fitness there was this middle aged greek guy who must have weighed 120 soaking wet who used to strap on a big-ass power belt, march over to the little dumbell tree, grab a 5lber and start doing a kind of baseball pitcher throw thing.... he'd do that for 15 minutes then leave. One time he cracked a dude on the head when he was getting off a bench, it was awesome to watch.

um yeah, just leave him alone if he wants to be a dork at least you're getting some entertainment out of it.

So the guy wears a belt incorrectly. Who cares anyway? Your not wearing it. Right? Hell if a guy wants to wear panty hose in the gym and it makes him feel better then I really don't care. Your in there for yourself and fuck everyone else. Just remember they might be saying the same thing.

Either that or work out at home. There's nut-cases everywhere! (and some seem to gravitate to this board....).

instead of being a dick and doing it for the wrong reasons, just tell him hes gonna hurt himself

if he doesnt listen...thats his problem

He could be wearing it for other reasons... not sure what that would be... but one thing I've learned in the gym is that some people do things for certain reasons (others just don't know).

You could always just "ask" him why he is wearing it... perhaps he has a lower spine anomaly that requires the wearing of such a apparatus -- it might be the "wrong" one... but still.

Always approach positive... never with the "you're doing that wrong"

Good points there... especially with nutcases over in the chat board. lol ;)

I always try to refrain from judging someone whether it be their workout attire or their routine... I often question people about it just so I can understand what they are doing... many times, when I ask what it is they are working... they will tell me and then say "Am I doing this wrong?" -- which gives you a great opportunity to HELP them if you want to... rather then coming up like a jackass and saying "Yo bro... you gotta keep your elbows in or you ain't doing shit dude..." :)

Not saying You (Griz) do this, I was just making a general statement. ;)

cditty is 100% correct. you may laugh at someone doing terrible tricep pushdowns where the guy is leaning way forward and doing almost a decline press. ask him what his goal is, and maybe you'll get "i am training for a tire pumping contest". oops!

one of the first things you learn as a trainer, dont judge the person's form, until you know their goal.

He's probably the same guy using his back when he does curls, so I'd guess he'd need that belt lol.

Hey didn't Mr. T always wear a belt?

I always thought it was best to mind my own business in the gym. . I could care less about what others are doing in the gym.

If someone came into the gym in a swim suit and fins. . .I wouldn't care. . .because it doesn't affect my training one way or the other.

I don't let other peoples appearances bother me.

you must go to my gym!

If you mean the gym where everyone's curling in the squat rack, wearing gloves for 5lb concentration curls and no one squats below parallel since, you know, it's "bad" for your knees?

Yeah, that be the gym.

And yes, I keep to myself and what everyone does should not affect what I do in the gym; however, when every skinny legged idiot is curling in the squat racks on the day/time of my squat session? Oh yeah - it affects what I need to do.

A -fuckin- MEN!! (and A -fuckin- WOMEN too!! -which is more fun!)

Citrus - Exactly!! When you do ask like that sometimes the answer surprises you and you learn something too. "I'm trying to correct a problem with my lower vertebrae, I wear this fucking belt to bed too. I know it looks stupid but the way it works is....etc." I saw a guy a while back doing something I thought was very weird. I simply asked him what he was doing because I'd never seen it before and I wound up finding out about a very good core strength excersise (and this guy is shredded!). Funny if some overweight guy (or skinny dude) was doing the same excerise I'll bet alot of folks would be thinking he was a nut-case.
It's all about positive attitude!
