Upgrading computer

I just put in an 80 gig hd and updated all my video cards/drivers, now i want to switch from a 1gHZ p III to a 2 gig pentium 4.

What other changes would I need to make if I moved up to the Pentium 4? I know I'd have to get a new motherboard. I also have to switch my memory to DDR right?

not necessarily, but you'd better!

or maybe rambus for a little added horsepower but probably not at that clock speed (2.0 GHz)

a friend of mine upgraded his computer (motherboard and processor) and had problems using his old PC133 sdram. He switched to DDR and everything ran fine.

if you want to stick w/PC133 (and i don't know why you would) Intel makes a motherboard that uses the 845 chipset and runs old PC133 SDRAM... I would definitely suggest using a board that runs DDR... I personally think that Intel makes very nice motherboards... but there are others...

So he will need a new DRR motherboard, a new video, new audio, P4 processor and he is ready to go?

I'm definitely going to upgrade from pc133 to DDR I just wasn't sure if I had to do it right away. Memory is cheap anyways.

I was considering buying a new computer because my HD crashed but I found out it was still under warranty. I took it in and to my surprise 2 days later they had upgraded from a 40 gig HD to an 80 gig and updated the video/sound cards free of charge.

After I purchase the new CPU, motherboard, and RAM it'll basically be a new comp for around $300.

doesn't the pentium 4 need RDRAM to take advantage of the FSB? I thought DDR or SD RAM only worked at part of the chip capacity.

Out of curiosity, what graphics card do you have now?

if the power supply in the case is P4 compliant, then yeah, he be all set and shit

most motherboards have on-board sound... good enough for the masses, but who knows if that is good enough

i like nvidia video chipsets, but that's just me

a lot of motherboards can be had w/on-board LAN too, which is nice

make sure you get a 5 1/4" floppy for legacy support

yes, DDR does not take full advantage of the 533 MHz FSB on the faster P4s...

the PC1066 RDRAM is the shit in terms of speed but of course you gots to pay
