Updo

I need help. I am going to that Marine Corps ball on Saturday, and I have no clue what to do with my hair. I need help finding a good updo (putting my hair up, in laymen's terms). My hair is just above shoulder length. Normally, I wouldn't post something like this on Elite, but I need ideas. I figured some ladies on here might have tried something with their hair for some kind of formal event. My hair stylist wants me to find a style I like for her to do. I have no clue. lol.

OK, let the flaming or actual suggestions begin.

i think started off with curls always helps...either with a curling iron or rollers. then just tie it back and losely pin separate curls up in a random fashion.

That was my thing. I thought that she would be able to tell me stuff. She asked me to get on the Internet and find something I liked. Ugh. My hair is really thick, so it will curl easily. The only problem is making sure that it will stay in that style. It usually requires many pins and lots of hair spray.

yep, my hair is very thick and has this natural wave/curl thing going on...it's half way down my back right now too...time for a cut!

i've never been a big fan of hair spray, but whenever i wear my hair up for something formal, i use about 1000 bobby pins...

What about a French twist? If your stylist thinks she can do it, a chignon is always classy looking.

Some sort of fancy French braiding might work.

Heck no....I'm wanting to get away from my normal pig tails. I'm going all out on this one and even wearing some shoes.

Great minds think alike. Instead of tucking under the hair in the French twist, you can curl the ends and leave it on top of your head like that. I have very thick, heavy, absolutely straight hair and find that this is one of the few updos that stays in for me.

Chignon's are cool, but I'd need a stylist to do one for me.

I've seen some gorgeous photos of intricate braid designs. You can decorate the braids with beads or silk rosebuds, lots of things.

You might flip through some of the hair magazines at the store, though those are only so-so.
