Update on my quest to bench 405

In june i was 6'2 180lbs and i benched 315 and inclined 275. I decided i wanted to seriously bulk up for the winter, so with hard training and a good diet i got to 220 by christmas. Here's how my weights went... bench-395....incline-330. I think those were some serious gains. The nice thing about it is that I am down to around 205 now and i am still putting up 315 for 6 or 7. So the strength is staying. My goal now is to get down to about 7 or 8% BF by the summer. Hope it all works out.

So, you went from a flat bench of 315 in June to 395 around the first of '03 (or now)? Wow. Outstanding progress, there...are you recovering some strength or are the BB presses somewhat new to you?

Even if both were the case, that's awesome. 405 will be yours very soon. And that's a very credible bench for your bodyweight.

You must have very strong front delts to incline as much as you do; at least in my case, I've always been able to flat bench a whole lot more than I could incline (I assume we're talking about a 45 degree bench). By "a whole lot," I mean to the point that it was almost absurd...when I could flat bench 315 for a few reps, I'd struggle to equal those reps on an incline with about 225-240!

That was around '96-'97, and I haven't done barbell presses since, save occassionally to warm up or to work out a little soreness in the pecs. But I never did hit 405 and part of me wishes I'd stuck with the flat bench. Keep at it, and if you find you need to slow your cutting down a hair so you can make four big ones, shoot--go ahead! It's a milestone, the kind of thing you'll be proud of for years to come. Once you breach that barrier it'll be far easier for you to work back up to it again, if you lost a bit of strength while leaning out (which I really see no reason for, especially given the fact you're probably already fairly lean).
