A girl brought a document on my GF's computer.

It was locked. She didn't know how to unlock it, and now Word itself is locked whenever she wants to start a new document.

Anybody know the solution?

LOL...nice. Sounds like a macro virus.

Try deleting normal.dot, then reopening Word.

I wouldn't jack with that document.

ditto on the normal.dot deletion or rename..

Delete the document unless your anti virus program can repair it..

I'll CTRL+ALT+DELETE your ass, punk!!!!!

Project & YLifter,

Thanks. I'll try that.
I never use Word so I'm clueless about it, but I've only been dating this girl a couple weeks, so I need to look like the hero here.

(Don't worry, I'll eventually tell her it was your all's help)

Did you get this fixed yet ding dong ?
Or does a real man need to come over there and take care of the little miss ?

I'm not at her place. I'm talking to her on IM. Hopefully she's computer literate enough to do a simple file deletion. She's talking on the phone right now though.

Stay tuned for exciting updates to come shortly.....

btw, what does the normal.dot file do? and why does one need it, or doesn't need it?

Okay, I had her search for normal.dot under all files & folders, but she said it came up no results found.

Is that possible?
Is there a certain place this file is stored?

Not likely...possible, I suppose.

It depends on the OS, but it's usually stored in the Office install directory, or in the user's profile directory.

Okay, cool.

I'll just have to go over there and find it myself.

Thanks for your help guys.

I tried hitting you w/ K but it says I must spread it around first.

normal.dot is the basic template for a new Word document in certain versions of Office. It also stores the custom dictionary, so when you do a spell check and click Add word to dictionary, it's stored in normal.dot. I don't believe it exists any longer in Office XP.

Yep, just found out that's what she has. That's why she didn't find it.

Oh well, back to the drawing board. :(

Before she clicks to open the Doc have her HOLD DOWN the shift key and
keep it down as it opens..

This will keep any macro from loading and let her know if indeed it is a macro or
maybe just a bad doc..

If it opens OK with the shift key down it is a macro virus..

Also run Norton or whatever and see if it sees it..

I'll be damned.

Well, that's what I get for supporting Office 2000.
