UNIONS.

I AM NOT A VERY EDUCATED MAN SO I DO KNOW KNOW THE DETAILS OF THE ECONOMICS BEHIND THIS BUT HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS.

FIRST, I DO NOT SEE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A LABOR UNION AND A COMPANY THAT SELLS LABOR. SINCE I BELIEVE IN A FREE MARKET I HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO ACCEPT A COMPANY THAT SELLS LABOR AS A VALID COMPANY.

THE PROBLEMS AS I SEE IT ARE WHEN UNIONS GET LARGE (MONOPOLISTIC??) AND EXERT THEIR FORCE THROUGH STRIKES, BOYCOTTS, AND THE WORST, SYMPATHY STRIKES.

IF A COMPANY HAS NO CHOICE BUT TO ACCEPT A UNION'S DEMANDS OR HAVE NO WORKERS, THEN THAT IS A SIGNIFICANT PROBLEM. IF A COMPANY CAN DROP A UNION TO WORK WITH ANOTHER, THAT'S GREAT.

SO THE ESSENTIAL PROBLEM IS, WHY DO WE NOT HAVE COMPETING UNIONS? CAN ANYONE ANSWER THIS? COMPETING UNIONS WOULD SOLVE ALL THE PROBLEMS WITH UNIONS. THE INVISIBLE HAND.

ANYWAY, I DO NOT THINK ANYONE CAN MAKE THE CASE THAT UNIONS ARE INHERENTLY BAD, SINCE THEY ARE BASICALLY JUST CORPORATIONS THAT SELL LABOR.

PLEASE CONSIDER THE QUESTION AND DON'T GIVE ME A BUNCH OF ANECDOTES SAYING HOW BAD UNIONS ARE. WE ALL KNOW OF HORROR STORIES TO DO WITH UNIONS, I SUBMIT THESE ARE CAUSED TO THE VERY LAST ONE BY LACK OF COMPETITION AMONG UNIONS.

The reason there are unions is to try to negotiate for better pay/working conditions. We have seen in the early 1900's what a corporation would like to do to it's workers - given the chance. You don't know what it's like to be an expendable asset that gets used and discarded.

I AGREE, BUT I DO NOT THINK ANYONE OF SOUND MIND WOULD SAY THAT UNIONS TODAY ARE GREAT AND DO NOT NEED WORK.

IT IS ONE THING TO DEMAND FAIR PAY AND WORKING CONDITIONS, I APPLAUD EFFORTS TO DO THAT. IT IS ANOTHER TO BE EXPLOITATIVE, WALKING OFF THE JOB AT CRITICAL TIMES, SUEING SO THAT THE COMPANY CAN'T HIRE OTHER WORKERS, ET CETERA.

BUT I THINK UNIONS ARE A GOOD CONCEPT. IN FACT, THERE SHOULD BE MORE OF THEM, SO THAT THEY CAN COMPETE. AND IF UNION ABC DECIDES IT WANTS TO WALK, UNION DEF CAN COME IN. THAT IS, IF THE CORPORATION DECIDES IT WANTS TO DEAL WITH UNIONS WHICH IT SHOULD NOT BE LEGALLY COERCED INTO DOING.

THE PROBLEMS ALL STEM FROM PEOPLE NOT CONSIDERING UNIONS TO BE COMPANIES IN AND OF THEMSELF, WHICH THEY QUITE CLEARLY ARE.

Your making it sound like we working strickly for your local union hall, a very small amount of our pay goes to them as dues, we have alot of union companies down here to choose from. If a Sub contractor hires union they know all the rules that we follow. Down here in Florida it is a right to work state and a contractor has their choose to either hire Union or Non-Union. Most of the time when a contractor hire Union they know exactly what type of workers they are getting, (schooled and trained in the craft they work in)
Dont get me wrong even union has a few bad apples. But for the most part you get what you pay for. Union is what makes this country strong. I will have to say that its not for everyone though. This is just MY thoughts on this

No. 1--- My Union dues are 27$ per month, a small price to pay for the service rendered.

No. 2--- We can only strike for an unfair labor practuice...we CANNOT strike over wages, nor attempt a wildcat strike in anyway.

No. 3--- The non-union people that work with me love our Union....everything we get in our contract...they get as well. It keeps both sides happy...

Ranger, some people just dont understand what the Union is all about. Maybe some day people will stop tring to find so much bad about it and start to understand the advantage of being Union

Unions serve a very valid purpose, go to a sewing sweat shop in Mexico or hell even an "illegal" one in NYC and see how deplorable the working conditions and pay are.

In a time when companies are laying off workers like crazy, stock prices are dropping and there is only minor growth in the economy still CEO's are raking in on AVERAGE 14.9 million A YEAR!

Greed is what drives the need for a union system. Period.

A man was in a Union.. the company went on strike. The man did not get paid. The man had to feed his family. The man went back to work. The Union got mad. The other Union members dumped 30 pounds of liquid concrete in the man's tool box, destroying $20,000 worth of tools. The man was also hit in the face with a lead pipe.

This happened 100 times to diffrent men in Pittsburgh in the 60's and 70's.

The man above was my father.

THAT IS THE KIND OF MINDLESS THINKING THAT UNIONS PROMOTE.

I AM WILLING TO BET YOU CAN NOT EVEN EXPLAIN WHY BEING A SCAB IS SO WRONG AS YOU THINK IT IS.

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH BEING A SCAB. IF CERTAIN PEOPLE DO NOT WISH TO DO A JOB FOR CERTAIN MONEY (AND CONDITIONS, ETC), THEN THEY CAN GO ON STRIKE. IF SOMEONE ELSE IS WILLING TO DO THE JOB FOR CHEAPER, THEN THEY CAN WORK - THEY ARE THEN A SCAB, AND WORTHY OF DERISION?

THAT IS ABSOLUTELY MINDLESS.

AND NEED I EVEN POINT OUT DBALLER'S EXAMPLE? THAT IS WHAT MINDLESS US VS. THEM MENTALITIES PROMOTE.

C'MON HOSS, EXPLAIN. WHY IS BEING A SCAB NOTHING TO BRAG ABOUT?

How many times can you say the word mindless in a row without proving you posses a 2 digit IQ? Are you saying I shouldn't pick on SCABS? Maybe you prefer the word RAT?

I REST MY CASE.

A scab is a union man that works on a union job behind a picket line. A rat is a union man that works in his trade on a non union job. hence the term "rat job". I will never be or understand a scab, but i have been rat.

I thought SCABS were lazy fuckers who would rather stand around with signs than go to work.

Lets put it this way.. not working does not pay for your family.

The old man severed ties with the Union and went on to triple his salary in the next 4 years.

He walked away from the picket cause it was doing no good.

Look at Lockheed in Atlanta.. those sorry fuckers get laid off all the time. Then they stand out in the rain like a bunch of lazy idiots. I drive by and yell.."Go to work you fuckin bums!!!"

You are proud of this? First off if there is a picket line, there is no contract with the company so it is no longer a union job. So whether it is a union member, or better yet soon to be ex-union member, or some asshole who knows he is taking another man's job while the collective bargaining process takes place he is a scab. Now you are a fucking piece of shit to admit that you belong to a trade union and have actively worked against the agreement by working for a non-union contractor.

Your a real smart guy. Obviously your father has passed on his fine qualities onto you. I doubt your father tripled his pay by leaving the union unless it was because he sold your ass and mouth on the corner.

hahahahaa that was a good way to prove a point.

I think coal miners were union guys.

What other group of people cry when they do not like their jobs? I drove by the lazy fuckers who don't want to work today and told them I would be back with a few cans of beans and a case of budweiser for them if they wanted to mow the lawn.

I do not like my job... I do not get paid enough... I think I will just stand outside and make threats until someone notices me!!!

What are you mad because you were born out of your mother's ass? Like it was said earlier, if it weren't for unions you would be making minimum wage and kept at a poor standard of living. You would work 14 hour days in unsafe working conditions. Now it took people to form a union , not people like your scab daddy, ones who would stand up and fight for their rights to make these improvements. Next time you go past the picket line you should stop and thank them because they are not on strike because they don't want to work. They are on strike to improve the conditions they are working under and when they improve their's everyone else usually benefits in some way. But as long as scabs like your daddy are around, they will have a longer fight. So drop off the beer as a thank you. BTW, when you say you drive by, are you driving across the picket line to continue your family tradition?

No.. I would never have to deal with a picket line.. You see if conditions are bad.. I just get another job.. not stand on the side of the road like a lazy piece of shit.

My old man might be a scab.. but at least he is not a lazy non-working cry baby. Next time I drive by the picket line I will thank them for making more jobs for people who do want to work.. and don't want to be pussies about it.
