UFC 63 Hughes vs Penn

Hughes vs Penn

Penn. His grappling is better, his striking is better, and there'll always be that seed of doubt in Hughes's mind. Penn by sub, again.

Swick vs Loiseau

This'll be a great stand up fight, no question. I think Swick has the better hands, but anyone that can go 5 rounds with Franklin isn't going to get KO'd easily. I'm going with The Crow by KO.

Lambert vs Evans

While Evans is one of the most boring fighters to watch IMO, he has excellent wrestling and takedown skills. Evans via GnP

Lauzon vs Pulver

Little Evil vs who?!!? I think Dana is throwing the man a can as an apologetic gesture for pulling the plug on the LW div, and essentially, putting a freeze on Pulver's career. Gotta love watching the lightweights! Fast and explosive.

Ruediger vs Guillard

Guillard has a mass of potential and ability, but he still strikes me as a gifted child without a clue. If Ruediger can weather the storm and take it to the ground before getting KTFOd, he should be good. Ruediger by sub.

Huerta vs Dent

I don't know either of these guys, so I can't say. But it's LW, so I hope they show it.

Neto vs Sanchez

Two more guys I've never heard of, but in this case, I'll go with Neto; He's got a BB in BJJ, and Sanchez has only been training since 2004.

Abbadi vs Gurgel

LMAO I hope for Gurgel's sake he puts away Addadi fast, or his career in MMA is done. He's had some bad luck for a guy with a lot of skill and heart. What burns me is there's thousands of guys that want to compete, yet Dana gives Abbadi a PPV fight. WTF? Gurgel by tapout from a vicious staredown.

Lee vs Griffin

More little guys! Weeeee! I'll go with Griffin by sub, who trains under David Terrell
 
Not a chance Penn wins, I can't wait for him to prove everyone wrong. Again. Seriously, what does Matt have to do to get some respect?!?

GSP is a great fighter but he's not a GnP'er by nature and if he can GnP a win out of BJ Hughes shouldnt have any trouble doing the same
 
My bet is on Hughes. Penn is no bitch by any means, but I think Hughes learned a big lesson since that fight. Like don't give up your back! Either way this fight is going to be good. It's not overhyped like recent UFC cards.
 
Well..I lost money on this fight. The first two rounds BJ looked great, Hughes had a real tough time taking him down. Then I guess he expended all his energy on that arm bar/choke combo and was just done.

Damn. Good fight though.
 
I think BJ was seconds from putting Matt out---I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have tapped anyways. Gassed himself out, then Huges had his day. Great fight. Did anyone else notice the verbal exchange between Georges St. Pierre and Hughes's father (I think it was his father) in the ring? The older guy did NOT look happy about something, and Joe Rogan was watching intently with a grin on his face. I wonder what was said, lol.

I was pissed at the Swick-Loiseau fight---David should have less hesitant. Had he had 1st and 2nd rounds like his 3rd, it would have been a different story. Solid defense against Swick's combos, he looked good in that department. Just didn't press the offense. But I bet he's well aware of that today. That's 2 losses in a row for him, I hope he can come back somehow.

Evans looked totally dominant; His takedown-GnP formula seems to work extremely well on everyone. I'll say it again, borning as hell, but he's 14-0.

Pulver, lol, that poor bastard. What else can I say.

Wicked KO by Gulliard! First time I've seen a striaight right to the midsection knock a guy out. That was no liver shot, but damn it worked well.

They didn't show the Gurgel-Abbadi fight, but I read it was a split decision. I would have liked to have seen that.

Christ, first UFC I've been able to catch live this year. Bloody shiftwork.
 
Hughes got a stopage which was probubly a good call as there was over a minute left and no real danger of BJ escaping that pin, but BJ Dominated the fight

How do you dominate a fight you lose? Yes he was up in the first two rounds, but Huges didn't train for a two round fight. I'm so glad that spoiled fat little Hawaiian lost - he has the worst attitude towards training and dedication I have ever heard from a fighter.

BJ beat Hughes in the first two rounds Hughes admitted it. It was BJ's lack of conditioning that cost him the fight plus he took this fight on a short notice. If BJ was in top shape I feel he could of won the fight as in my opinion he is a better all around fighter then Hughes. All the local fans in the Hawaiian islands new that if BJ not in good shape he most likely not going win and thats just what happened.
 
I called the swick fight i knew swick would beat him.

bj penn no matter how much u dont like him is an awsome talent. if he could get out his stubborn ways and bring some people in to help him condition and diet hed be even more awsome. the guy trains half asses and still dominates only to get gassed its a shame hopefully this will wisen him up cause hes an awsome talent.
 
IMOP if you do not care enough to train your hardest to prep for a fight then you do not deserve the opportunity to be champ...
 
I lost all the respect i had for George ST.... Even after Bj kicked his ass i stil had some respect for him but lost it all after sat night. He said in the ring i wasnt impressed by your performance... What a dick... BJ beat george st. more than he beat Matt and Matt still pulled through it to get the stopage.. BJ kicked ass... All in all a really good fight night. Too bad GSP had to open his mouth...
 
Great fight as predicted. I can't take anything away from Penn, he stopped every takedown attempt Hughes gave, was hitting him hard, and tried everything to submit him. But late round conditioning did Penn in. Everyone saw Penn stumble to his feet at the end of the 2nd round, he was gassed. Hughes saw it, started pounding Penn becasue he couldnt keep his hands up, and that set up the takedown. That fkn crucifix hold is unfknreal. No1 can stop that once it's locked in. Hughes pounded BJ's head like a mallet on a pork chop. Hughes is the man.

BJ is a serious talent, and he would have won if he trained his conditioning.

When did matt hughes become such an arrogant prick? I was not happy with his comments after the fight. He is a world class fighter, and a world class champ. I really thought his comments about BJ right after the victory was wrong.. Im kinda hoping St. Pierre beats the piss out of him now.

Has been for quite a while, talks shit about everyone who isn't in the militich camp. He has been talking shit about GSP ever since he lucked out that win the first time. Hughes is a classless assclown.

I'm not the biggest BJJ guy out there, but BJ is a great fighter
to say otherwise just means you don't really know anything about fighting

BJJ is not over-rated. Its the best ground game you can have. You can have a bigger guy on top of you and you can hurt him from the bottom. Its a great martial art. Now that mma is here though, just knowing one martial art isnt going to get you anywhere. You need to have a boxing or a muay thai background for striking, etc.. So i dont think its over-rated. Its very useful, but you cantrely on that alone.

And as far as hughes goes, he needs to stop the trash talking and act like a champ. He is making himself look like a little bitch lately. No wonder the crown was chanting, BJ.
 
As was stated in an earlier post, BJ did not gas. According to various sources, he suffered rib injury an was unable to breathe properly after the second round. A rubber match is in definite order.

I have just noticed a trend among all BJJ fighters, they have this arrogance that their fighting style is so fucking superior. Back in the day BJJ did dominate to some degree but now all of the best fighters are true MMA's. I have every right not to respect a fighter or a fighting style and post my thoughts about it on this site. You little nerds can give me negative karma and bomb me all you want, all it does it make me laugh even more at you. Brazillian Jiu Jitsu = overrated, BJ Penn = overrated. Keep on making excuses why your guys lose in Pride in UFC though. I know you hate seeing guys like Hughes beat your best but that doesn't change reality.
 
Some of you guy's need to look at the bigger picture...

This was BJ's second fight back into the game, he got 6 weeks notice, and STILL outclassed the best Welter known to UFC...

If he had been training the whole time like Hughes, we would have won, hands down.

It did show Matt has 1 style, ground and pound. And when he can't get the other man down, he's got nothing. Its not about race or background. Its about the fight. Sure BJ was way in over his head, he couldn't last 3 rounds letalone 5. But the point is, he handled Matt with ease until he ran outta puff.

GSP will beat Matt this time. If it wasn't for Carlos Newton falling off the band wagon, we would have taken the belt long ago.

How do you say that Hughes is such a well rounded MMA fighter......he is a awesome wrestler with good take downs and decent subs.....His stand up game is total CRAP.......the only time he landed some puches is when BJ could not hold his hands up due to his ribs.......Also BJ should fight at 155 .....he weighed in at 166 didnt cut a pound.......Hughes was over 180 at fight time......BJ is the only fighter i have seen gladly fight any weight class.......BJ is way more of a well rounded MMA fight than Hughes will ever be......Fuck Hughes didnt even stand up and trade punches with Royce.......that should tell you how good his stand up is.
 
BJ is a very good fighter, probably could be better than Hughes if he didn't have such a terrible attitude towards training. Still, Hughes is willing to put in the work and it pays off for him, thats why he is the best in the world at 170.

Just because someone is a good fighter though doesn't mean you have to like or respect them.

The reason we bicker back and forth is because these men give their blood, sweat, and tears in closely contested combat and provide us with fights that thrill and excite us. Though we have our favorites we must realize our favorites are defined by their adversaries. Our favorites are great in part because their adversaries drive them to greatness. This, gentlemen, is the sum and substance of MMA's beauty.
 
I never said Hughes had good standup, the man wins and thats what matters. I am so sick of hearing excuses why Penn lost, Hughes won the fight even though he had a horrible performance. His strategy was fucking retarded trying to pull on Penn's leg and gas himself. The bottom line is PENN LOST THE FIGHT GET OVER IT. Stop making excuses why your guy lost. BJ Penn is overrated and doesnt have what it takes to be a champion. He doesnt have the heart or the genetics to do it. A lot of people like him because he is an underddog with a horrible physique like most of you guys on here. You can relate to a balding, fat, ugly, midget of a man because thats pretty much what you wake up to in the mirror each morning. I understand your thinking, but again that doesnt change reality.

Damn all your brains must be in your biceps just like Arnolds lol.... of course fighters in heavier weight classes would have the advantage over BJ thats just commen sense but when you going pound for pound thats a different story as BJ really aint in Matts weight class. Matt was supposed to fight George St Pierre, but GSP pulled out due to injury and it was only four weeks notice for BJ.

Wait did I hit a nerve muscle? oh no it was a norse muscle lol...hahahaha me personally I never even feel the earth quake but alot of other people did with damages to there property and power outages over all hawaiian islands so I guess there was one even my family members felt it but for some reason I didnt feel anything must be my evolved super saiyan powers lol......
