No, but then most people aspiring to hold this type of power then were already generally wealthy, had established themselves already in an industry unrelated to politics & of reasonable character,intelligence, ability etc.

Nowadays we have "career politicians"; people who have never held a real job in their life, have never evolved beyond their student activist days & wish to enter politics purely for the excellent salary, pensions, caveats etc. as opposed to bettering their nation.

I'm not sure. There may have been just as many stupid back then, but to me they seem more confident and outspoken now.

Doesn't surprise me at all. You can stop 10 people on the street and ask them what states share a border with Mexico, and I bet only 1 or 2 will be able to list the four. Geography is VERY weak in American education. But now to put it in perspective: If someone is highly intelligent, and has common sense, the LAST profession they'd want to touch with a 10-foot pole is politics!!!!!!

Because intelligent people want to accomplish things, and want to do things that make sense. Exactly the opposite of what a politician needs to do to get in office (or so they demonstrate). They are forced to support ideals which will get votes, but which may make zero sense, and be counterproductive.

Its the ol' "Do I do whats right, or do I do what will win the next election" choice. Because our population is so splintered and stratified and always thinking "whats in it for me" the two are almost always mutually exclusive. Therefore politicians promise everything and can deliver minimally. But they win the election and thats all that matters to them.

I think we all know which way politicians have been going in recent decades.
