trazodone for insomnia

how much would one take a night, and what could be possible side effects? And will it knock me out? the bottle says 50mg per night, but im not sure if it was just used for an antidepressant at that dose. The number ive read is 150mg to get some sleep.

Dude don't take that shit. I took it for a while and it doesn't work that well and it gives you a massive hangover. I don't mean a little drogy I mean it feels like someone hit you in the head with a hammer. There are so many better things out there that don't give you a bad hangover after. If you are going to take it I was told by my doctor 150mg to 300mg before bed is the normal dose. It is also in the PDR under Desyrel thats the dosage they recomend also. Just my opinion. Hope this helps.

Try 300mg of Valerian root about 30 min before bed. Fina was keeping me up all night at first, but helped out like a miracle drug. It is an herb you can buy just about anywhere.

Maybe its just me but 100 mg will knock me out cold for a good 8 hrs. When I wake up I am a little dizzy for a few minutes but I just hop in the shower and within 10 minutes i'm fine. After about a week, you get over the hangover effect and its not bad at all. This is just my personal experience though. I would say that a 100mg trazodone is morepowerful than a 2mg xanax as far as knocking me out goes but I'm sure it works differently for different people.

Bro, if this is your first time taking it start slow and low. Use 50 mg at first and see how that works, take it on an empty stomach 30 min prior to bedtime. You can always bump it up to 100-150 if needed. This drug is one of the odd-ball antidepressants, and usually isn't used for depression much because it has sides and there are newer, better drugs. For insomnia it works, but is a nasty drug. Your head feels foggy(anticholinergic), and your nose may get stuffy (it causes histamine release), but since you take at night this may/may not be a problem. IMO there are better drugs for sleep disturbances, namely Ambien and Sonata. These newer agents work fast and have shorter half-lives so when you wake up they have already cleared. If you don't like the Traz, tell your Doc you wanna try one of these newer ones. But they are schedule IV and can be addicting (although low) over time. Therefore if your insomnia persists for longer than 2-3 weeks, you may want to get it checked cuz you could have some underlying problem. Peace:D

i wouldnt mess with it bro. I had to take it before for anxiety and depression. I tell you man, it knocks u out at night. Then u feel like a zombie the next day. Also, it is addictive. You build a psychological addiction each time you take it and when you dont have it your body doesn't want to sleep either. I would just get some valerian root. They sell it pretty much anywhere. Or check out GNC, they have valerian root as well as other herbal products specifically for insomnia and anxiety. Good luck bro.

I was using trazodone and zoloft early in college in order to deal with depression.
I was told by the doc that I shouldn't take it for very long because of a number of negative sides (although who doesn't want priapism?).
Eventually I stopped using it - but I didn't know that you shouldn't stop cold turkey. I had horrible stomach and gastrointestinal issues for about a month. I also slept for 3 days straight through at one point when first off of it - it had screwed up my system.

I later was told by a doc that in some people using that drug, they don't develop a tolerance and need more, but instead become more sensative to it and the same amount gives them increased sides over time.

All in all, like what everyone else is saying, I'd avoid it.
