Hey guys,
What really brought me to join this board was actually this exact forum. A lot of you guys seem to know your shit. First a brief history.
I am 5'9 and a half roughly 185 pounds very muscular and stocky...but not fat by any means.(if it means anything, you can still see my abs pretty well LOL) My weight training and eating are strictly conducive to size, so I don't diet. I eat anything and everything and I go hard in the gym. My workouts can be characterized as similar to football linemans workouts...much emphasis on power, explosiveness. Not many reps, maximum weight, you all know the deal.
I was an all district wrestler and probably could have been better. (I played bball all my life and only took up wrestling my Jr. year oh HS, it was my first year that I made varsity and subsequently all district honors.) Now in my 3rd year of college I have started to take a liking to fighting sports. I just recently began a boxing program at my school. Teaches you the basics - stance, basic punches, basic combos...stresses plyometric movements, abdominal and structural work etc. Also, we do not spar.
I am thinking next year of joining an actual boxing gym where I would spar. My question is this: how can I prepare on my own to meet the demands of an actual fighter. I do heavy bag work, trying to get the basic punches and the movements down (using my hips, keeping stance, keeping my guard, being explosive) I also shadow box with hand weights to help my hand quickness.
If I could have some sort of regimine to follow that would help me greatly:
i.e. what punches to throw, short combos, movements and even ways to improve my defense.
Obviously this would all be in preparation to actually join a gym and train. I am thinking somewhere along the line I may want to dabble in some martial arts. I believe Jeet Koon Do would kind of match my style of fighting since I have a small background in grappling.
Anyway, bare with me fellas. I'm real new to this. Basically I would love to have more confidence on the streets and eventually train in a discipline.
Thanks a lot and keep working hard!
