training around pain->

Hi everybody, I am new to this board but I have been reading it for awhile and you guys are great from what I have seen. It is nice to see people that know what they are talking about. Anyway, I am coming off a long training layoff(9 months)- I have had Sciatica really bad and I finally decided to just start lifting again and deal with it. I hate not being at the gym so I got me a brand new membership and I am going today- do you guys recommend anything special as far as what I could do for legs? I like squats but I think they may just be too damn painful for me right now- I have pain that shoots down the back of my left hamstring- it sucks. Should I just do exercises that are less painful? I am not doing any structural damage by lifting, it is just painful as anyone who has had a pinched nerve can attest. I am starting back with a simple 3 day a week heavy basic exercise routine(although since today is my first day back I am going to do some higher reps with lower weight so I dont kill myself). I am currently 5'11" 195 and I think my bf % is around 13 or so...I have little love handles that I need to get rid of. I want to get up to a lean 200-210. My waist blimped up to 35" since I stopped lifting.....dont you hate that?!! Any advice would be very cool...thanks. :)

I would really work the reverse hypers a lot...and maybe only train to 75% intensity. Of courese 100% intensity varies from person to person...

I have something similar in my right ham, it's not diagnosed but pretty sure that's what it is. i just take a couple of ibuprofen before I train, they kill pain and they have anti-inflamatory properties so can help with any inflamation you might have. But bottom line is do you want it bad enough to deal with the pain?

With pain thats shooting down your left hamstring, have you had an MRI done. Are you aware what is actually going on down there or just assuming?

That quote kicks ass by the way. "You can call me Susan if it makes you happy"

Yeah I want it pretty bad. My pain tolerance has shot through the roof! Between years of jiu jitsu training and this Sciatica I have pain every day. I am really sick of it but I cant afford to go to a sports medicine doc yet. I even get leg pain when I have sex but that shure as hell dosen't stop me! I think I can beat this mentally....I just imagine no pain. I have tried taking 9-10 advils at a time but it dosen't work. Oh well....

I feel for you bro, I don't think mines as bad as yours, but I kept going heavy and even added another 35lbs to my deadlift (that's when I really felt it) and it's actually getting a little better now

Light weights, no aches, no medals.
