Who wants to pay $17 a CD? If it was cheaper, it'd be reasonable. I wont buy any significant amount of CD's until I'm pulling in $100k+ a year. Even then I'll probably download tons of shit. Even if I was making millions. Plus it allows you to enjoy a large amount of music. I listen to tons of music across many genres. I couldnt do that without mp3s.
