Top 3 over rated bands

But they couldn't compete with Disco, so they took the path of "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" and became overtly, calculatedly commercial.

I can't decide if The Doors are overrated or not. Morrison was a horrible singer, who would have been kicked out of any other band. And most of his "poetry" is hopelessly puerile. The musicians all sounded like some sort of Holiday Inn Lounge act, they were so lightweight they didn't even have a bass player. Yet the combination of elements kind of worked. Almost. Sometimes.

good points

although the same could said of Queen (your 1st point) and i think Queen was very clearly a great band.

No, I'm disputing your point that "all the members had successful solo careers", or that they pioneered anything.

They jumped the shark at "One Of These Nights". Prior to that they were a very good little country-rock band. But they couldn't compete with Disco, so they took the path of "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" and became overtly, calculatedly commercial.

What did you say Morrison was a horrible singer??? Morrison had a style that was entirely his own. I guess you would think Lou Reed was a horrible singer as well? Or Eric Burden? That band sucks without him singing plus he sounds great in almost all his songs.

Morrison's singing only worked because his songs were written around his vocal limitations. I bet he couldn't have made his way through a Lennon/McCartney composition to save his life. Like I said above, at times The Doors were able to transcend their limitations, but not always. Ever seen any live Doors video? Morrison was dreadful a lot of the time.

lol thats b/c he was wasted out of his fucking skull! Almost no one can sing as well as Lennon/McCartney except for maybe the beach boys

The Beatles overated?
No way
In 10, 25, 50 years people will still listen to the Beatles
I'm not sure they will remember Kurt Cobain/Nirvana (for example)

Joy Division/New Order helped pioneer the fusion of new wave and dance

Rolling Stone site had a poll, like 5-6 years ago, where The Beatles was put against all the other artists in the world. Can't remember how the question went but still Beatles led the poll with about 70% of the votes. No matter how you look at it, is Beatles really that good? I don't think so.

Beatles music is as good as when it was recorded BUT if they would have been over 40yo fat bastards they never would have been that big because of their music. There's so much more to their success than the good music so they are definitely overrated.
