A friend sent me this list via email......I agree w/ most every statement on that list except #1.

There's no scientific proof that conservatives are "ugly" or "dumb."

But, then, Bush is in office, and he represents the "dumbClub" without a doubt.

yes it was him...Those were quote from his book "My American Journey"

I would enjoy reading another book 10 years down the road if his political life ends at that point to hear what he has to say now....Even if your not interested in the military or politics I would still recomend anyone reading this book. It gives a general outline from growing up poor in NYC to his retirement from the military

His opinions and observations are very well worded including those of visits to china and russia during the height of the cold war
 
For another view on Colin Powell, you should read "About Face" and "Hazardous Duty", both by Colonel David Hackworth.

Hackworth, with his TWO Distinguished Service Crosses, NINE Silver Stars, EIGHT Purple Hearts (and yet he lives), and total of ONE HUNDRED THREE medals, is America's most decorated military vet.

Further, he is the ONLY senior officer who served in Viet Nam and had the courage to criticize it openly.

Basically, he calls Powell an administrator, not a warfighter, who was largely responsible for the nightmare in Somalia and some other things.

I don;t agree entirely with Hack - he is a bitter old man in many ways - but he's got some good points.

Interesting books I should check them out...from Powell's book it sounds as if Somalia was unfolding into the real shitter within the time he was packing up and leaving. I got the impression that the UN's changing role one which he sized up to being like Vietnam screwed up when field commanders asked for armor support and didn't receive it during the transition within a day or so of Powell leaving....

TXCollegeGuy and Matt----I still fail to see why the two of you find Colin Powell to be heroic. True, he is the first African-American Secretary of State. But, the African-American community largely fails to recognize him. Why? Because he's turned his back on the African American community upon many occassions. For instance, the recent UN Conference on Race would be an incredible opportunity for the United States to, along with the rest of the world's nations, to discuss issues of race and how to work better together in a race-blind world------MR. POWELL WILL NOT BE ATTENDING. Thus, the United States, just as it did with the Kyoto Treaty is embarrassing itself to the rest of the world.

Further, Mr. Powell is playing "second fiddle" to National Security advisor Condolezza Rice. It's been reported in the Times and many other publications, that many of Mr. Powell's recommendations on foreign policy have been largely ignored, and that Ms. Rice and Mr. Rumsfield are calling all the shots in the Bush Administration----since we know that Bush himself isn't.

All in all, Mr. Powell has sold himself out to the Bush Administration, is refusing to stand-up for what he believes, has turned his back on African-Americans w/ his views against affirmative action, and reminds many of us of Justice Clarence Thomas......like Thomas, he's simply forgotten his roots. Sad but True.

I find that insulting to say that man has forgotten his roots. He is the son of immigrants and has lived an life that can easily be said "the American Dream"

He has served his country far longer then others his age and with more integrity for what he believes...Rumors by unnamed sources are hardly worth it's weight in gold to say he's turned his back on his people and that the President doesn't listen to him...Ryan if you haven't read his book I encourage you to do so, and I can only hope years from now he will write another to tell us his thoughts and opinions about what is going on now.

I was a child during the war in the middle east and I looked onto him as some one I could look up to, because he was chosen to lead us through the fights. I never once looked at him as an African American Man but rather an American plain and simple. Until He joined the world of politics in his current role I doubt you would find any influential black leader that would have had something bad to say about him. To me he's one of the hero's of this country, because he chose to continue serving during some times when the American people didn't seem to care if men like him did or not. He's not perfect which he admits to making mistakes like any other human being, but I hardly see the recent Race conf as something we should support. Though I wish we hadn't left I dont think the terms of the final document produced from their would have had a chance of being changed had we not left. This was a time for Europe to stand up and not just sit back as we take the heat for standing beside Israel there.

RYAN, what does Colin Powell OWE to the black community? Did they all chip in to assist him in earning his status? What does anyone OWE to the people in a group that you are similarly labeled? Are there no principles that people are to be held to?, only groups? Do you know what principles are?

It is enlightening to see liberals, who scream and cry about inequality, yet when one of their protected minorities is elected to something, but is not affiliated with their party, they demonize that individual. It becomes self-evident that liberals do not wish to help individuals, only the "agenda".

As for forgetting their roots, I agree. They neither steal, do or sell drugs, kill or have children out of wedlock, while leaving the mother to raise the children alone. These are major problems in their "ROOT" community. Seems like their roots have forgotten some things too.

Regarding the UN - would this be the same U.N. who's last "conference on rascism" degenerated into such an anti-Semitic hate-fest? (The Canadians walked out mid-conference to protest.)

That back in the late '80s tried to push a "new world information order" that would have amounted to UN-sanctioned censorship?

Americans don't trust the UN because of crap like this. The upcoming race conference will probably degenerate into the African countries screaming "it's all the US' fault" and whining about colonialism's effects as an excuse for one dictatorship after another. I think we should attend and participate if the discussions are worthwile - and then walk out the moment the kleptocrats such as Mugabe open their mouths and say something stupid or the Arab states start their anti-Semitic routine.

Okay, I can't resist... I will comment on one: hating communists. Ryan, you're saying you don't hate communism? I mean "hate" in the same sense as "hating" racism or "hating" fascism? Not in the McCarthyite-paranoia sense, mind you, but a good intellectually sound loathing of a really bad, evil idea.

A lot of liberals hated communism: JFK, LBJ, Humphrey, etc. Does this mean they "blow" in your eyes?

Okay, a couple more:

On "hating herb" - William F. Buckley is one of the country's leading proponents of ending the drug war and legalizing most drugs, including pot. Many other conservatives agree; even many conservatives who oppose drug legalization in general (e.g. Jonah Goldberg) are willing to consider weed separately from other drugs, and as generally equivalent to alcohol. You're just flat-out WRONG on this one. (RyanH seems to be a firm believer of not letting the facts get in the way of your bigotry.)

Someone else already covered the "liberal extremists vs. conservative extremists" point. Again, you're just wrong, or VERY selective in the news stories you follow.

Ryan, did some conservative REALLY piss you off at some point in your life, to the point that the moment you hear the word "conservative" all ability to hear and reason go out the window? Are your parents or someone else who you really care about Religious Right and can't handle your being gay? I just can't figure out why you spend so much fucking time with your "why I hate conservatives" crap instead of posting more constructive ideas of the sort that you lefties claim to be so full of. (Not that I spend a lot of time worrying about it, mind you, but it is a mystery.)
