Too much Protein=Kidney problems???

Corsaire

New member
Last week I went to see my dietician because of High Cholesterol (too many whole eggs and red meat diet!) and he flinched big time when he heard my diet description. Adding all up, it was a total of 220 grms of protein per day. He warned me of kidney problems, and said that the protein intake is 1 gr. per Kg. of body weight and NOT per lb. like I had heard and read all along. Iwas told to avoid red meats, such as pork, steaks, and just go for lean stuff such as poultry, fish, beans, soy milk, white eggs, etc.,etcc.
I weight 183 lbs. right now.
Please, experts outhere:
What the real scoop on this protein intake per kg. or lb. of body weight. ??????
What about kidney problems????
Please, advise....thanks!

change your dietician

Actually, my dad was on the Atkins diet and he got a kidney stone from it. I do not know why or how, but that is what the 3 specialists told him.

He isn't even close to in any kinda shape though. He has been way over 300 pounds for about 10 years now and was told to try the Atkins. He said that it was working great.....until he got the kidney stne. He is also 50+ years old as well. Also, his BF% is extremely high. Just your good old FAT guy......That's why I am trying so hard to keep my fat down. Genetics will kill me if I don't work hard. I am the only one in my family under say 25% BF.

I once got the advice to drink a lot during diet in order to provide enough water for the kidneys to work well.
Maybe you didn´t drink enough?

It wasn't me, it was my dad and I would not be surprised if that was the cause. Diet Coke is probably all he drank. I am not sure though

For bodybuilders there is no evidence that eating more than 1.8g of protein per KILO will lead to better muscle growth. There is also no evidence that short term high protein diets harm you kidneys if you're otherwise healthy. As yet no one knows what long term high protein intake will do to your kidneys. Couch potatoes have got more important things to worry about, health wise, than how much protein they're eating IMHO.

Since there is evidence that cycling your protein intake results in better long term anabolism, it makes sense to me to alternate high and low periods of protein intake, thus also giving your kidneys and liver a break. Always drink lots of water.

Whole eggs contain nice amounts of lecithin, so they are probably not the cause.

Ask him to show you some studies. He won't and can't. Well except for doofy opinions written by some lunchroom lady with a mustache. There is no proof that going above 1 gr/lb will negatively affect kidney function. If there is a disease process going on, then yes, but not for an otherwise healthy person.

You're trying to lower cholesterol, so why would Corky recommend that you consume chicken since it is higher in cholesterol than red meat?

Anthrax is right, time for a new dietician.
