tonisillitus?

ok...my gf started getting a sore throat and she had tonsillitis in the past. close to exam time so i decided to use oraldene (chlorohexetidine) mouthwash to kill anything i might have picked up

i did get a slight sore throat but no tonillar inflammation

anyway it appears i overused the oraldene and i got some ulceration of the palate.

in addition i got raised lumps on the posterior 1/3 of my toungue, which im assuming are the lingual tonsills...can they be inflammed by irritant chemicals? they are a little sore and look red, some more sore and raised than others...

either way i switched to salt water which i probably should have originally used to gargle (i was afraid of EBV which is why i went for an antimicrobial gargle)...either way the sore throat is back and myright tonsil has a small bump on it and kinda feels sore when swallowing...

gargle with salt? or switch back to the oraldene being careful not to let it burn? im worried if i get tonsillitus i;ll be screwed for the exam (i HAVE to be able to talk fluently and at length)

Danielson:
Oraldene has some anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties, so while it may help reduce the bacterial side of your worries, it is useless towards a virus, like EBV.
Too much of a good thing can work against you, such as drowning the shit out of your throat with an anti bacterial which will really mess up the normal flora balance you have...not all the bacteria is bad in your throat, and messing up the good flora allows the bad to flourish freely.
Irritant chemicals can and will play hell with your throat, tongue, and all the mucosal surface they bathe.
At this point from your description, I would suggest that you see your doc, and let him/her check out your throat. You are at a good risk for an infection, given what you say it sounds like you have an abscess or two beginning, or at least an inflammed lymph node. If you have one beginning, all the mouthwash in the world won't stop it[it will ease the symptoms, like pain and pain while swallowing - odynophasia], you must take some anti-biotics[which won't help if it is viral, but can reduce the chance of a co-infection].
Rather than try to tell you "buy this or that", go see the doc, and take it from there.
Good luck on your exam - what's it for?
Hope I helped.

check your karma as to what the exam is :) (hit profile incase you dont know how to)...the oraldene said it worked against 50% of virus's, i couldnt see how but i beleieved it anyway

shit....i think im getting tonsillitis they look inflamed plus i have a sore throat. one if the tonsills has a raised lump on it about 1mm by 1mm and raised 1mm, it has a dark red border round it...the lingual tonsils are going down and the errosion has completely healed

. i was so scared i'd get it i ended up using it quite a lot, knowing it would take out the commencal bacteria, but i was so damned worried about strep throat. shit....a friend has erythromyicin, the GI side effects might make me not take it but if i get worse i will. getting a Dr's appointment round here is hellish at the best of times, i think i want to cry! he has amoxicillin as well but if it is EBV i dont want the rash as that wont look great!

thanks for the reply though, really appreciate it, im so f-ing stressedn about exams, that and late nights have probably immunocomprimised me :(!

crap as soon as karma starts to works i'll send some

hmm....sore throat not as bad today, thought i had a fever but it seems humid and its 28-29*c in my room...other than that and some general aches in my legs (i stood up a lot last night) im feeling ok. lingual tonsils are no longer palpable or sore, but still slightly red. my gf says my tonsils have looked the same as they always have (she does the same course as me and has been checking them regularly for a week)

question i wanted to ask is this...my med notes say im allergic to penicillin, but my parents never had me tested and said 'they were afraid i might be as my dad is generally allergic to lots of things'

i have had amoxicillin (a penicillin) before with absolutley no issues, so would i be safe taking penicillin v. ? the other option is eryhtromycin but i dont want the GI effects...and its going to be hard to get a docs appointment for a while...

thanks for all the help btw :)

You should not have an issue, but check the PDR as to what the current lit says... if you are in the hospital, have an attending you're tight with check you out, or a resident[at least 2nd yr, not the new batch of 1 yrs, until at least Oct after they have a few hundred pts as practice under their belts].
If you were never tested, then why did you take amoxi if you thought you were allergic to pen?

lol, my parents were so histionic about additives and allergies they assumed i had the allergy and forced my gp to put it into the notes. i found out that there were no instances of me taking penicillin or even being tested and this was all based on my mum assuming my dad was allergic (his memory being to hazy), and i was in hopsital at the time so the doc figured it was safe

i have teaching schedule tommorow, if no docs show up I'll try and swing by minors and see someone i know
