...In your opinion(s)...what is THE most important macronutrient in the diet??

Carbs
Protein
Fats

Without a doubt............PROTEIN
Anybody who says otherwise can't call themselves a bodybuilder.
......next thread please....

try gaining mass on a no-carb diet...

.....next comment please....

you cant really pick which one is more important, it was like the last post when you said to pick which aspect of training most affects your success, you cant pick just one all aspects work together, but when all are at proper levels maybe one aspect leads to a greater measure of the success than the other but you need all at proper levels to achieve success. now if all those macronutrients were at proper levels according to your diet and goals i would say carbohydrates are the most important, carbs manipulating insulin and as well as there effect on protein sparing and energy for the body to keep from muscle breakdown all have great affects, lets not forget glycogen storage also.

carbs. for their energy, protein sparing effects, etc. the brain runs on carbs, so the nervous system demands them.

the same can be said of proteins. can be broken down into glucose, but is a waste of a good steak. necessary for recovery, repair and growth. protein cant be made from carbs or fats so they are vital.

or...

fats...necessary for hormone production, satiety, lubrication of joints, metabolic functions.

so....which can we do without?

none of them.

well...there is NO such thing as an essential carb........

I'm just stirring up thoughts here......

YOu see low fat this low carb that - each has it's strong points and I can make an augument sfor any of the three....this would make a good newbie read thread.

You are all about asking questions which do not have a definate answer...lol...maybe that is why this is the "Training Discussion Board". :)

For me, I grow more when I really up my carbs to about 100g or more per meal...

yep...it's about thinking about things that you dom't normally think about....

see - another vote for carbs......

protein.

that said the aspect that the average BBer has most capacity to improve on is the area of fats. the vast majority of people and even bbers are not getting enough EFAs.

I am biased however because I just added flax to my diet and the results are nothing short of amazing. I thought I was doing everything right but I obviously had an Omega-3 deficiency.

carbs........ protein and fat are there......... but carbs is the staple that this bodybuilder has pleged his oath too.

That is a loaded question. Protein does nothing for you if you don't have some carbos with it. I do take in twice as many grams of protein as I do carbs though. And although I am losing weight, I am also gaining strength at the same time, which leads me to believe that I am adding some muscle mass. The key here is to get an ample amount of EFA. I am also a firm believer that fats from meats, whether they be fish, poultry, or red meats, are essential to a good diet. My answer though, I guess, is that carbs are least important. When worse comes to worse, your body can use a process called gluconeogenesis to produce glucose from proteins. I would not recommend trying this though.

Corn, I'm liking these discussions of yours. Keep 'em coming ...

My vote would have to be ... all of them. Can't grow without all of them. Calories are calories.

Then again ... clean food is much more beneficial. So, to shut me the hell up now ... I'll say carbs and protein.

All three are needed really so its impossible to grow on just one of them.

I say bodybuilders should go with fats/protein like steak, eggs most of the day then hit the carbs hard during and after training.

For the natural bodybuilder, carbs are the most important macro as the body needs to maximise the efficiency with which it uses energy and builds mass, whereas steroids negate that need to a large extent due to the anti-catabolic properties they possess.

If your natural and you're on a low carb diet, you're on the fast track to nowhere

How am I supposed to stay fat if I don't eat a high carb diet???

imo - carbs are most essential for strength athletes....then probably fat believe it or not
