Most of you guys know I work on a teen psych unit.

We have a kid on the unit right now who has a presentation a lot like some of the school shooters and there is huge concern for him. It's a case I've been heavily involved in.

I was walking through the unit today and he was having a nap. I caught one of the nurses appearing to be doing something over him in his room. When I walked in, she was sprinkling Holy Water on him. WTF?!?

She spent a great deal of time trying to convince the doctor the boy is possessed and became quite agitated with me for busting her. Just when you think you've seen it all!

I think I'll be drinking wine tonight....

Probably. We have a new doc there who writes staff scripts for pretty much everything.

I was ready to ask for something today. Felt like maybe I was the crazy one!

You were right to confront her.

I'm obviously not opposed to religious ordinance to heal/bless the sick and afflicted, but it should be voluntary by request and/or consent.

I'm not opposed either but within family contexts. Consent is huge! And sneaking around when he's sleeping doesn't help with paranoia! Lol

Can you believe it??? I thought the doc was going to lose his mind. We had a good laugh after but more one of those laugh or cry, is this real life, laughs. Gonna be a helluva family meeting Friday! She's an RN too. Experienced.
 
I don't see the problem. Why would you need consent to have water sprinkled on a kid? It's not really gonna do anything but get him a little wet. (It's not really holy)

What was her reasoning to thinking he was possessed?

Whether it does anything or is harmful or not isn't the issue.

In a non politically correct manner, this is a non issue, and move along.

However, you don't perform religious ordinances on people without their consent if they have the ability to give consent.

For someone in a coma, etc is different.

This. It's highly unprofessional to do something like this. She could lose her nursing license if it were reported. It's not only because he's a minor but you cannot "treat" someone with your own belief system.

She said his eyes are dark and empty. She has a very strong religious background but I'm not entirely sure which religion. Ukrainian Orthodox or something. Which is ok. I totally respect that but it just puts us in such a bad position. Now it's the ethical dilemma of do you tell the family this happened?

Anyway....he was brought in with a question of psychosis, after going to school with a knife and threatening to stab a girl who had apparently insulted his "girlfriend". He's not psychotic but is certainly odd and really focused on dark things. He has a documented recent history of killing/ dismembering a couple of cats and there's been a big community threat assessment done against him due to his threats of violence at school. He writes a lot about killing things. Family history of violence and parents who reportedly minimize and have poor follow through. He's almost an asperger's kid but not quite. He doesn't seem to have a lot of empathy and isn't caring too much about consequences.

So...we rule out psychosis and then look at any other symptoms and try to determine his level of cognitive ability, functioning, other mental health diagnosis and family/ community supports and issues. So is he a psychopath or is he a low functioning kid who is angry and focused on violence as a way of expressing himself? Odd enough that he's created a fantasy world and now he can't get out? We'll have forensics look at him too since he's been charged with uttering threats.

It's one of those cases that you really cross your t's and dot your i's because the risk level is high. He's actually not certifiable and we will likely have to let him go this Friday, as his family is pushing for it.

Our system is really sad up here. They are looking at it as "behavior of child" which I guess it is and don't see that there is a child protection need. They are open under investigation right now but have been directed to close their file. Our legislation for child protection doesn't include children's behavior as reason enough to place a kid in a facility. They may be able to do something based on risk to the other siblings in the home but they aren't anxious to jump in.
