Speaking of ferocious nocturnal predators, last night about 4:30 AM I was awakened by the sound of a strange loud mewling howl from my cat. It's a peculiar sound that he only makes when he has caught some small fuzzy thing and is seeking my approval.

So I got up to see what kind of mess he was going to leave me to clean up, and found the cat in the hall abusing some sort of large rodent. I couldn't tell if it was a small squirrel, a large chipmunk, or what. I petted the cat and gave him some praise, and then he carried it into my bedroom and dumped it at the foot of my bed and then ran off to his cat food bowl in the kitchen.

I went and got a broom and dustpan to pick up the corpse and dispose of it, but when I got back the animal, which I could now tell was a baby rabbit, was sitting up and breathing. When I tried to snatch it, it hopped off, but I was able to capture it quickly. I carried the baby rabbit outside, dumped it, went back inside, locked up, and went back to sleep.

This morning I got up and let the cat out for his morning prowl. Minutes later he was back inside with the rabbit again. And it got away. "Great", I'm thinking, "I've got a baby rabbit loose in my apartment." The cat was beside himself searching for the lost prey, and finally cornered it. After a couple of failed attempts I was able to re-capture the rabbit, and carried it back outside and dumped it in the garden where hopefully it will be able to find its mother.

Well, I am glad we finally put this great mystery to bed

I was getting daily messages: "Is that your cat?" "Your kitty is so cute!" "Is that one yours too?" It just seemed easier to answer them all at once. They're just internet pictures. Except the avatar, that one's mine.
