how do u find the cheapest airfares....sheesh, i looked on the web and ouch!!

i wanted to go to phuket in thailand during december-january for 2-3 weeks with som friends but the airfares are REALLY expensive.

who do u buy ur airfares from, direct from the airline or from an agent? do u know of any good travel agents (guess thats more for the UK bros)? and is it dependant on the date during that period when u go?
