Well, last night I got tossed for a loop. Had a 65 year old man at my gym (really nice guy) as me what kind of routine he could do (weights) on M,W,F - machines only due to arthritisis. I want to help him very badly, but not up my alley. Anyone have any suggestions? He's in good shape for an older man, much karma for some sets, reps and exercises.........
 
What is his current activity level? Does he have any medical conditions? My father is 67 and he walks and does some light weight work...although he's very strong naturally. I've seen other 67 year old men that act like they're on death's door step though. I'm guessing since he's in a gym to begin with, he's not part of the latter category. I would get more info from him, and then set him up on a typical 4 day split, but just adjust the weights and intensity to suit his level of conditioning. What's his goal? Weight loss? Longevity? Strength?
 
pool work is great for arthrigtis
water resistance is much less stressfull on the jionts and very effective
otherwise keep it very simple, probably no more than 2 movements per body part
make sure to do abduct/adduct movements ass well
 
He could use HST principles but at a lighter weight.

I have trained elderly peopl with HST and have found tremendous results. The weights must be lowered.
 
I would have him talk to a doctor before you do anything. Putting him on a weightlifting plan could be disasterous without having prior knowledge to his health, medications, and capabilities.
